Ahoy from Squamish, BC

Hi from way down the end of Howe Sound. I've been messing with boats for the last 20 years off and on. Learned the wind on a Laser on Alta Lake in Whistler and sailed quite a bit over the years on a Camper Nicholson 35, owned a M26 for a couple of years and since last year have owned a Hunter 34. I've been to this site a few times and really enjoy the variety of characters and topics. Look forward to being involved in future forums. We love to race down here on Sundays and I'm sharpening my skills on a variety of boats from an Olson 40 to a San Juan 24. If you would like to see what we sail in the summer months take a look at youtube and search for SOAR 2010( our annual regatta) Come and visit us at the Squamish Yacht Club. Its not always like this! Cheers, Ian

This forum is highly informative and entertaining. I look forward to your contributions. We're almost neighbours -I keep my boat at Fisherman's cove in West, Van. Cheers,
Bill

Was the town named after the game?

The word "Squamish" means "mother of big wind",or "where big winds meet" in the westcoast native language. The sailing around Squamish can be quite exciting, similar to the SF bay area.

I thought Victoria was where the big winds meet ... no, that's where the hot wind meets

The Juan de Fuca can be a nasty place on the wrong day,but last year for me in Aug. I had a rough crossing to Port Angeles ,then a flat calm motor to Cape Flattery, barely any wind to Cape Blanco.

Still pretty choppy out in the straight but the winds are moderating and pressure's rising. Tomorrow looks to be better.

Welcome, Ian...Some of the best kite boarding and wind surfing in the world off Squamish. Drove a logging truck for Alice Lake logging there in the early 60's when I wasn't commercial fishing. Quite a nice little marina there now... noticed it on a drive to Whistler this summer. I remember attempting to climb the 'Chief' face years ago and got so scared half way up (maybe a third) that I came down with my knees shaking like leaves in a hurricane. Welcome to CF... the advice you get here is worth exactly what you pay for it... Capt Phil
