Ahoy from NH!

I'm the first mate aboard the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping's 48' aluminum geared-diesel catamaran R/V Gulf Surveyor. This vessel is designed to accommodate a variety of hydrographic and oceanographic research projects at the University of New Hampshire.

I am also a part-time graduate student focused on designing a system for collecting trusted crowd sourced bathymetry from your fishfinder! I'm currently working on reverse engineering Garmin's datagram protocol to allow me to control their sonar with my own computer. This could also open the door to sonar integration with OpenCPN. If anyone has working knowledge related to this challenge, I would love to hear from you.

When I sneak away from work, I can be found messing around with my 1979 18' Pointer lobster skiff, or playing in my funk band, Harsh Armadillo.

Looking forward to connecting with many of you,
Dan

i look forward to seeing the results of your work. Open source is the peoples way of dealing with data and i would love to have all the relevant data inputs available on my computer screen in the cabin, relayed to an ipad in the cockpit. Radar, sonar, wind speed, GPS the whole 9 yards. Guys like me need people like you

Greetings! You'll see me messing around Portsmouth Harbor a lot, and I see the Gulf Surveyor out and about often. Sounds like a great gig!

Re: Ahoy from NH!

Interesting idea about reverse-engineering Garmin sonar. I have one, and I'm in the Portsmouth Harbor area a lot. Oh, and I do happen to hold degrees in Computer Science and Digital Electronics Technology. Process control is a little outside my area, but I'm a quick learner. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

Also, I always wondered if UNH had openings for relief captains. I'm retired and not really interested in full-time work, but I've been looking for an area where I could fill in as needed. I hold a 50-ton Master's credential, and am a qualified coxswain and instructor in the USCG Auxiliary. I sometimes run that 30' Grady-White moored at the station across from the UNH pier in New Castle, when I'm not out and about on my own 36' trawler or doing deliveries.

Re: Ahoy from NH!

Hey Tom,

Great to hear from you. I believe both R/V Gulf Surveyor, and R/V Gulf Challenger are flush with crew right now, but I will certainly keep you in mind. You may have some luck with filling in trips for the Shoals Marine Lab. I'd be happy to point you towards the folks you'd need to contact.

If you're in the area and interested in the Garmin project perhaps we could meet at the Gulf Surveyor and I can show you where I'm at. If it seems like a good time, we can go from there. I always enjoy collaborating on projects. My degrees are in marine bio and ocean engineering so this project is forcing some serious learning for me in the computer science space. At this point, I'm trying to understand some wireshark captures on the Garmin network, and then attempting to decode packets with the hex editor, Hexinator.

Happy to go into more detail if you're interested,
Dan
