What a wonderful world! To be able to fulfill a childhood dream of buying a beautiful sailboat to sail the 7 seas. Reality check: okay shes a real fixer-upper 1965 Cheoy Lee Offshore 40, and though I signed on to sail during summers in college I have a lot to learn, and I ain't as young as I used to be. But I did it!! and am able to live aboard and work on her until we a.) raise sails and head out or b.) money runs out and I must get a job nearby till we're ready. Lets go with a.), no?

If the essentials are ok... hull, rigging, sails, enginge, rudder/helm... why not head to better places and do it as and when...
If your confident in yourself and the boat thats what counts... you'll live with the rest till you get to fix it... and then start all over again... and again... like the rest of us...

Thanks for the encouraging reply. It is not lost on me that being in a marina in SoCal creates this pronounced sucking sound near my wallet. Funds needed for my beautiful boat spent just to have it sitting here while I get scolded for each attempted repair. Suggestions? I'm seriously new at this.

I have fond memories of sailing aboard an Off-Shore 40 in the 80s. Great boat.
I hope you can find a yard that can let you do your repairs and is within your economic budget.
There used to be a yard way out in Otay Mesa that was very inexpensive but that may have been done away with many years ago.
