Hello to all,
I have been a covert armchair sailor on this site for sometime but have finally taken the plunge, got my feet wet, walked the plank, and joined up. I have been availing myself with the enormous amount of information posted concerning all aspects of what I consider my future.

I am a 59 year old widow in Wasilla, Alaska. I have a 1973 22' Tanzer CB sailboat that I sail in a local lake but whose previous owner sailed her in Prince William Sound out of Whittier, Alaska.

I am finalizing the current commitments in my life so that by September 2017 I will be free to travel and sail wherever I please. I intend to do so by the skin of my teeth...a spartan traveler....as Larry Parday stated "Go small, go simple, go now." Well...September for me.

There's a saying up here that you drive south with your snowplow attached to the front of the truck and stop when you get far enough that someone asks "what the hell is that?".

I like it! I will try to remember to keep an oar handy if that need ever occurs. I am hoping it won't.

Welcome Aboard and good for you Hypernette! I'm ahead of you and behind you at the same time. I plan on doing the same (sailing away) in April, just on the opposite coast, so ahead of you. Only behind you by a few years (55 here).

Retired US Navy here...when the time comes, we just throw and anchor over our shoulders and head inland until some landlubber asks....

An oar might be easier to lug inland than the anchor but the anchor would definitely give me a workout and keep me in fine shape.

Welcome aboard Hypernette! I am guessing you might be wondering how to best get some practice in sailing to boost your plans for September. Actually just going out and having as much fun as you can and building your skills in your Tanzer is a great start. Do you have other sailors nearby with larger boats who you might be able to crew for too? Good luck in your dream!

Hi Don, Thanks for the words of encouragement. No, I really don't have a lot of help locally. I do my best to find time to travel to the West Coast for sailing lessons. I am planning on completing my ASA 104 in February. There is a very small club on the lake where I sail my boat that I intend to join in April. Of course, the ice won't melt until May. There are several interesting sailing "Meetup" groups in Portland, Seattle, and Marina Del Rey that I have joined. I am patient...eventually, it will all fall into place at the right time...I hope
