Ahola All!!

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum but actually joined the website under a different name a few years ago. I am currently at anchor in Prince Rupert, Dominica. I am the chief engineer on a 161' motor yacht and I have been working on the ocean since basically 18 years old.

I fell in love the summer of 2009 with a girl in Duluth, Minnesota. She wasn't liking nursing school and decided to try yachting with me. We are now working together on this yacht for the last 5 months.

My dream is to get out of this 'commercial' work and sail around the world in my own sailboat, selling my engineering skills for a bag of food. Well, the good news is my GF is right on board and loves the lifestyle and sailing.

So this is the first step for us getting to that dream. My first question which I need to answer is monohull (safety) vs. multihull (speed & fun). The best way I've thought of to answer this question is to do many short rentals of both types and then see what we like. We rented a 43' Beneteau two weekends ago and sailed Martinique/St. Barts/Anguilla over 5 days. Next up is a multihull.

Cheers all,
Phil

Welcome to the forum!

I'm a mono guy all the way, but cats can be full as well. Good luck!

Greetings and welcome to CF.... again
I love Cats and mono's... however for ocean voyaging I lean towards mono's to date... one day I may try a crossing on a Tiki 36 just to see.. it may change my mind as its a more 'capable' low budget option..
Hope you enjoy the charter... set some upwind destinations into your itinerary to get an idea of your boats abilities/limitations if you go the extra room/comfort route...

Yes Phil, welcome to the forum. Sound like you have a plan and a partner to pursue it with - although I'm hoping the 'girl' wasn't attending nursery school, but working at one! Chartering both monohulls and catamarans is a good idea, although you should try to charter boats that are the same (or at least very close to) the ones that you will be in the market to buy. Lets face it, apart from the number of hulls there are also HUGE differences between various boats within each category.

Re: Ahola All!!

i would think price and space would be an issue too... I believe that cats/tris will need to be bigger and therefore more expensive...???

jsut my thought from the little research i have done...
