After Two Years, it's Finally Coming Together
DESTINY is finally getting ready for her pieces to be reassembled and she is as anxious to be back in the water as we are! The house has an offer standing and the yards sales have begun. It's finally happening! After the masts are stepped and the rigging completed, the shake down done and the Lat's & Att's party in Anacortes this August, we hope to cut the dock lines and head to San Diego and participate in the Baja Haha this October. Whew, this is the closest we've been in 2 years to actually starting the RTW adventure and the anticipation is building. I wonder if I'll ever experience the "Green Flash" ....

It's easy to understand your pleasure from this, and feel inspired by it. Good luck!
And by the way, welcome to this forum. I think it's a good one.

I've uploaded several and they show up on my profile, but not on the main page. Grrr. DESTINY has been quite the project and in all, there's nearly 3000 pictures and she's not even finished! It'll be early summer when she hits the water from the hard, and then a couple more to get the sails finished and up. Hopefully, she's complete by August and ready to sail!
Thanks for the posts!!!

Okay, so I figured out the Avatar is the picture! This is DESTINY the day she launched September 17th, 1934. We're re-rigging her back to a square rigged schooner.

She was custom built for the newpaper magnate Randolph Hearst. In 1954 he sold her to Howard Hughes. Hughes sold her to another guy in 1972 who changed her rigging from square rigged to a Stays'l Schooner. While Hughes owned her, he had Hirchsoff (sp) add 15 feet to her. So, now, after 75 years, it was time for her to get a refit - all 4 fuel tanks, water tanks, deck planks, hull planks, masts, the stem was replaced, stanchions, etc. The interior is all teak and during the 70's, she was remodel'd and put into charter, cruising around Hawaii for approx. 10 yrs. She was confiscated during WWII by the US Navy and they repowered her. That engine was replaced in 1995 and replaced with a surplus GMC 671 and a 12.5 KW generator was installed. The engine has about 1000 hrs on it, the gen-set is practically new. The De-sal plant is new and we'er having elect winches installed with this refit. It will be just my husband and I sailing. We lived on her for a year getting used to her, and we had no issues or calamaties that we couldn't handle. Both of us have 1000's of hours handling boats as we owned a charter dive business and commercial diving/salvage biz. We're bringing the dog (an english mastiff) and his 2 cats and cut the dock lines.

This Lady has dated some very interesting fellas that's for sure. You should stop, and anchor in San Simeon Cove. Where she most likely spent much of her time for deliveries to the Ranch. You may get a special tour, or some photo ops from the curator. I would send them a note, and let know of a possible stop. You may end up with a very special tour of the Castle?.......... i2f

That's a very probable itinerary once we get going. From records and guest books, writings of Hearst and then Hughes, DESTINY hung around with all the pretty people of that time for sure. It'll be interesting to be sure. Thanks for the link too! Didn't have that.

That is a hell of lot of boat for two crew to handle. Sounds like she'll be in great shape when you leave. We will be headed down the coast PNW to San Fran in mid to late Aug. --- in a little smaller boat, 37 ft. Hope to run into you.

Paul, that would be wonderful to sail along to San Fran with you guys! Hopefully, we'll be ready by then! The sails will not start their construction until mid June, so ... with 13 to make, they may not all be finished and strung by August. We have our fingers crossed!
