Maybe I'm half way there. I do try to fit in, but what we are doing could never be considered financially sane, viable, or affordable. We can't afford it, but we can't seem to stop.

I use the term mariner....but using your descriptions, I suppose i'm a yachtie with the low budget, shying away from big groups etc......

But having no boat, does that just make me a dreamer? lol

I'm a boater...I love them all...a canoe trip is great.... as is sailing off shore on a long passage... as is a trip across Lake Geneva in that cool old paddle wheeler...as is running up the river in a bass boat.
I love them all....I'm a boater.

To me, a sailor is one that sail - on a lake or across an ocean. A cruiser - cruises. A yachtie - has or at least digs the boats. Now a boater sounds like something from USCG regulations.

I call myself a sailor, at times degraded to a cruiser, or even worse - to a liveaboard, like today.

But I have a boat and I will not hesitate to use it !!! ;-))))

Yachtie: Anyone who wears white pants anywhere near the boat. (For women: Or high heels.)
Cruiser: Someone who lives aboard and travels and doesn't spend much money in the places they visit. (AKA "Cruiser Trash" which is, mindboggingly, not an insult.)
Boater: One who boats. Day-tripper, out for a day of fun, not a lifestyle.
Sailor: Two possibilities: 1. Sailboat racer. 2. Someone who wants to be associated with "sailing" and therefore owns a sailboat, but doesn't actually get the sails up. May never actually get the sailboat off the dock.
(FD: None of these are mine, "I'm just the messenger".)

Reality Check
Sterling Hayden was an interesting character and his books are a great read of his rise to Hollywood fame from being a sailing fisherman, his persecution during the Mac Carthy inquisitions and his flight from the law to sea while kidnapping his kids.

I remember a great line in his autobiography:

“I am probably the only person in history who joined the Communist Party and bought a 100 ft (?) yacht on the same day!”

I'm going to take issue with the anti-white-pants sentiment (which I suspect is being offered tongue in cheek.)

I've been to destinations in Central America where it's considered bad form for adult males to walk around town in shorts. Even when it's over 38 degrees Celsius! At that point, white pants are the cruiser's best friend.

Which is to say, there will always be a pair of white trousers on this yachtie's yacht.

A yachtie living in Hottentot
Is seen wearing white pants more often then not
When a 100 degrees
And barely a breeze
It helps prevent the onset of jungle rot.

He did go against the flow often just to piss some group off that he found offensive..... such as the McCarthy nuts..... but in the end it probably cost him dearly. He was a character and had some profound thoughts.
