Winter Boating Sucks!

just been down to do a bit of work on my macwester, only to find my rib has flipped itself during the night with the 25 hp sitting upsidedown in the mud!

fortunately it was low water and was able to right the thing ,not without difficulty as there is 2 foot of thick mud to stand in!

lost a shoe, feet and hands are now just about thawed out-- its 3deg c currently.

will have to return in a few hours when the tide is in to flush and get it running-------not looking forward to that as it will be even colder this evening

Re: winter boating sucks!

When we lived aboard in New England we enjoyed the experience, but by this time of year we were really looking forward to not having ice on the decks and not having to hump water to the boat every day. Best of luck getting the motor cleaned up.

You have my sympathies.

Depends on where you live. On the west coast it is either raining or it is not.

Re: winter boating sucks!

My daughter had planed a great spring break sailing trip with friends, but we've had an very cool spring, generally 10-20 degrees below average. The day before we left it snowed and we had toe shovel the deck in the morning.

Even so, it worked out OK.

Sail Delmarva: Spring Break 2013

The kids did bring bathing suits; that part didn't work out.

Atoll, Winter is the curse of the Northern Europeans. Why do you think we're so easy to get along with and never quarrel? Why do you think there are so few Northern European comedians? Why do you think we invented meade? Good luck and good sailing!

Re: winter boating sucks!

My sympathies to Atoll for his problems!

I love sailing in the winter. I especially love it when it is clear and sunny and below freezing, and the wind has that distinctive weight to it, and the water seems a little oily, and you can sail so well on just a little breath of wind.

Of course you need really good clothes, and even with them, you don't want to be on deck for 12 hours at a time. Plus not much to do outdoors at anchor. But with decent central heating, it's fine. Just don't fall overboard!

No winter sailing for me this year. I'm on the hard since November. Hoping to launch about April 27. Now what is REALLY miserable in winter, in this climate, particularly this unbelievably frigid spring (here at Cowes, where it rarely freezes even in January, we will have frost tonight ), is WORKING on the boat outdoors. Ick!

The bad side of winter on a boat... father, mother and 10yr old daughter rescued from boat in Lake Windemere, UK, with breathing difficulties... mother and daughter died shortly after arrival at hospital.. father still being treated..
Looks like Mr Monoxide strikes again...

PS; above is breaking news on Sky
