Wheres the article?

General grumble to no one in particular.

We had (have) an article sold to cruising world and were told that it was coming out in the December 07 issue. Proudly told the family and friends. So excited to be in there cause its one of the biggest mags and we are pretty proud of it. And yet... No article in there this month. We did not get an e-mail or anything. The CW check didnt bounce, and its been almost a year since we sold the article. Does this happen often? Clare is e-mailing them today. If we have been bumped forever I am going to be one sad puppy. How embarassing. I think Clares dad went out and bought a stack of copies...

At least it is almost Christmas

My wife is a freelance writer - most papers and magazines don't pay unless they publish. You had already collected your cheque and, as you say, "It didn't bounce".

Since they didn't publish your article, you may be able to get CW to release it so you can sell it on to another magazine.

Happy Christmas!

I would talk with your editor before assuming that they aren't publishing it - I've been freelancing all my life and it is not at all uncommon to have pub dates slide as the editorial calendars shift around. It may only be delayed to accommodate a larger-than expected feature, budget change in editorial/advertising balance, breaking news, or something along those lines... a friendly phone call for an update would be appropriate.

Cheers!
Steve

Yep,

Clare is on that e-mail today (though it prob wont get answered till after the holidays). Im not peeved at them or anything, I was just looking foreword to seeing it in my favourite magazine, and was afraid it might not ever see the light of day. Clare wants to frame the thing. It is only an short article about the ICW, and not about a destination at the ends of the earth, so I imagine that could happen pretty easily.

Thanks,
B

PS Merry x-mas everyone

Don't panic. If they've paid for it, they're gonna use it sooner or later.

Just give your editor a call and ask ( in a nice tone of voice) what's happening.

I freelanced for more than a decade (and now have a regular gig that is still officially freelance) and some of other responders are quite correct -- things shift and change.

OTOH, it can happen that editorial staffs change as well and an editor who was the champion of your story may have gone to his/her reward, leaving the story in limbo. But a simple phona call can clear all that up.

A mate of mine was in the film Lantana (big film in Australia a few years ago). The Cast and Crew screening is on at a cinema in the city and my mate asks if he can bring some friends. the producer say yes, fine bring as many as you like. So my mate takes 10 people along with him.... mum, dad, sisters, brothers, next door neighbour etc etc etc...

sits in the cinema waiting for his scene....

waits......

waits......

LOLOLOL

Ends up on the cutting room floor.

Your first article is important, so I hope it gets in there soon, and the sentinces you spent ages honing arn't decimated by a literary pygmy of a sub-editor
