The owner got both engines rebuilt on insurance, the hapless pair were taken to court both by the police (stealing), and the insurance company to recover their costs

Xen, you'll get better advice here if you include info as to what country you live in and what boat you own in your public profile.
Ah ok, I just took the leads off the starters. I found this rubber cap thing to cover the ends incase they got wet. Yea its a lagoon, i still have to fix it up I dont expect to leave for a little while. I have no use for so many beds. And I am from North American land mass.

My friend got a really good deal on a Catalina 36 that was found anchored up in BC waters. The boat was stolen from somewhere along the Columbia river. When the owners came down the dock in the Spring, the slip was empty. They had to hire a PI to go find it. They decided that selling it made more sense than having it trucked or delivered back to Portland. Sad story for them.

Sailboats do indeed get stolen.

I keep my boat on a lake, so if it disappears it would have to leave via a lift or the locks, wouldn't be hard to find.

We've had a couple boats stolen round here, one of them was indeed a sailboat. Couple guys came out of the bar on the river and decided to take a trip in one of the boats tied up along the river. They made it out and about 3 miles west along the lake, then got bored and ran her ashore. Jumped over and walked home I guess. Anyway the boat ended up being pounded pretty good to the extent that the bottom chine was opened up badly and a lot of the gear was lost. As far as I know, no one was ever caught. That was a small plywood sloop being used to train the local scouts. The guy doing it didn't want to spend money on a slip so he tied up along the seawall. The other one was some kid ticked at his dad, took the family cruiser out with some buddys and ladies for a beer bash. That one was found a couple of marinas over.

As for anyone stealing a sail boat, i wouldn't worry about it too much if its in a marina or club basin. At least not unless its TEOTWAWKI and the MZBs are coming to get you and everyone else. (I love Dawn of the Dead and Maximum Overdrive!) I would leave the decompression valves up, so the engine will spin but not start. I'd bet 90% of joyriders won't have a clue about the care and feeding of a marine diesel.
