OK - an extravagant splurge maybe -

Anyone compared these models?

http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-GPSMAP-...0700064&sr=8-5

http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-GPSMAP-...0700559&sr=8-7

http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-GPSMAP-...0700559&sr=8-8

I think my buddy has the 640 or 620 and I will try and play around with it some more. I played a little with it but wasn't in buying mode. It is 100% touch screen vs the 441 and 441s. I presume the only difference in 441s is the sounder included. Can the sounder be turned off? I.e. free up the rreal estate.

The 442 and 441s are quite a bit cheaper. Any user experience?

Or even a user of dead reckoning, or any kind of navigation.

There's really only one watch for sailing :

OMEGA Watches: Seamaster Planet Ocean Chrono - Steel on steel - 232.30.46.51.01.002

I might even buy one one day!

You can sail around the world with a wrist watch. Stay out of the polar regions and you'll be within 100 miles. Not bad.

Save your money. I wanted one badly too until I got one. It's a nice watch but the altimeter is not really one but a guesstimate based on the barometric pressure. If I had done more research I would have know this. Also, the temperature function is grossly affected by your body temperature and they tell you that in the instructions. If you take it off and set it aside for a while then you get a better reading, but that kind of defeats the purpose to me. Finally, the atomic time feature only works in certain parts of the world (also hidden in the fine print), mainly the US, Europe and Japan, definitely not in Thailand or anywhere in SE Asia or Australia.

I still wear it because it has a nice light, the compass works and the solar charging is great ... no dead batteries.

Doodles:

I think the one I linked to isn't atomic; I actually just want to know the monthly drift rather than have it update for me automatically. And the altimeter I'm okay with; I don't really need it and just need the barometric pressure. The temp I could care less about.

So I think it will be good for me, but I hear you on those problems. Casio makes a few different varieties of their pathfinder series I suppose you got a slightly different model (with the atomic time).

RH,

Yea, they make a bunch with ever possible combination. As long as you aren't depending of those function you're right you should be fine. I was just a little disappointed but as I said I still wear it and enjoy some of the functions. I like the way it looks and seems well made. It is fairly large (some models thinner than others) and I have small wrists so it looks a bit clunky but that doesn't bother me.

Just show your significant other some of the jewelery and fashion that they have for sale.

Guaranteed to fix any problem with your "windfall".

Fortunately the first mate is not much into jewellry and that makes her a gem in my book. The expedition watch comes in a unisex so that's a definite.

I bought an external gps puck for my iPad non-3g and was heading down the ipad nav solution. The garmin 640 may be too extravagant even for a windfall purchase.

I need a couple of new cabin fans so they're on the list.

As an extravagance I was looking at this.

http://www.amazon.com/Raymarine-Syst...0824201&sr=1-7

I have ST60 depth and speed. The ST60 wind would be nice but too many boat bucks and a little fancy for my little boat. The ST40 may be the ticket for my meager needs. Anyone have any experience with the 40?

So

- expedition for first mate
- fans
- ipad bracket
- ST40 wind

Getting to be a nice list so far... Christmas in April - Easter is when I can pick up the shipment at my brothers house...

Just chill out with a glass of wine and 'How To Enjoy Cruising In Retirement' or 'How To Cruise Between Two Sea's' by Geoff Woolley from Amazon Kindle.

Books are a way to go and ebooks are the only way to go. However, I'm still more into not chilling with a 1/5 of rum and "how to set your hair on fire while sailing upwind" as a good read...

The list above runs $495 plus shipping so I'm almost there. Just trying to get some info on the ST40 before I pull the lever...

Thanks for the help folks!

Re: What to Buy at Amazon ?

what about a solar charger and a bunch of toys to use it with. A rechargeable razor for instance. Then when you sail into port you can pop it out and have a close shave even though you had a beard just a minute or two before.
