What Should I Carry on Board ?
At one time, bibles and iron tools where popular items cruisers carried to trade with the "locals."
I don't plan on carrying either of them, but was wondering what sorts of "hard to get" items are popular these days?

Medical supplies are one of the historical favorites for distribution. But more up to date I would say Nike shoes, iPads, cell phones, and lots of batteries. Old TV antennas are popular as even in the swamps of forgotten Indian tribes you can find a TV in each hut.

I once heard corn beef hash was a good trade in Jamaica but don't know about the rest of the world.

I'd love to trade with you: some bread and a hand-knit sweater for an iPad? And technically I am in a developing country

My wife used to trade cheap bead jewellery type stuff for the ladies living on out of the way islands who had no way of getting hold of such stuff.
Good way to get in exchange local arts and crafts and of course fresh meat, fruit and vegies!

Re: What Should I Carry on Board ?
If you are going to remote areas, simple reading glasses (drug store types) are extremely welcome. Can be had for cheap if you shop around. Carry them in several strengths... you will be blessed, and return useful sight to some older islanders.
Cheers,
Jim

That's a really good idea -- especially since I need them myself, plus they won't spoil or ruin if they get wet. Thanks...

If you are cruising Northern Europe, have a few bottles of red wine, preferably French (Bordeaux is best). It makes wonderful gifts.

Re: What Should I Carry on Board ?
I take flashlights that do NOT need batteries. Solar, windup, shake, whatever..
I've had merchants bidding against each other for them

Re: What Should I Carry on Board ?
I second the idea of reading glasses. We bought a couple of dozen of varying strengths at a 99 cent store. If going to South Pacific or Indonesia, local women like bright red lipsticks and nail polish; also sandals which can be purchased cheaply in Panama but are VERY expensive out in French Polynesia. Small fishing hooks for the men. Coloring books or plain papers and crayons for the little kids.
But trading never happened for us except once. The locals all wanted 'gifts' except for the one time I traded 3 cases of beer purchased in Panama for $10.50 per case for 21 very nice black pearls in the Tuamotus.
