Boy I sure don't either Doodles....I guess that really is the heart of the matter...People can and do take things 180 degrees differently then some other people....Its common in face to face situations as well...every once in a while I have to go into back peddle mode and explain myself to a customer or my wife for that matter...

FWIW I understood Mark compleatly...whats wrong with all you goof balls...

I have to second this sentiment.

Just because one is a newcomer to a particular forum, doesn't mean s/he is by default a newcomer to social interaction in general.

Every "community," online or otherwise, develops a culture. People who don't take time to study that culture and become familiar with its mores / norms prior to injecting themselves, without sensitivity, into its discourse are asking for trouble.

When an intelligent human being goes to a party of strangers, do they jump in and start talking loudly about whatever they like, and then cry foul or act shocked at the responses they might get? Or do they typically assess the sitiation and culture in the room before becoming a vocal participant in the evolving discussions?

If people took more time to learn about environments before interacting in them, perhaps they'd learn what to expect, and would be better prepared / equipped to differentiate sarcasm and good humored / sharp edged wit from true hostility. They might also learn that sensitivity and respect for the attitudinal terrain and norms of a given community are typically paid back many fold.

Bottom line: As for most forums, IMO, people should lurk more before they post. A little acculturation goes a long way toward becoming a productive member of a community, and can save a lot of pain and ire.

But what do I know. My post count is a whopping single digit.

I do not think Mark's post was rude and I think it's clear enough.

There are (in all forums, not just this one) some people whose minds are made up on certain subjects and going against the party line gets you shot down. On CF that is less likely to happen because the mods will step in if things start spiralling out of control.

So, the mods do a great job in stopping things from going thermonuclear, but the flip side of this is that you have to be careful not to get too worked up about things. It is very easy, in the throes of passion, to cross a line and get ticked off.

It's a trade-off....

Over in 'The Sailor's Confessional' people relate what went wrong, often with an element of culpability by the confessor. You seldom see any rudeness there. Try that on SA.
Why is it so? It's because the Mods maintain the ethos of being nice to each other. There is no other place on the web that I'd trust to unburden myself of my mistakes. Long live CF and the mods who do sterling work.
As for Ad Hominem posts, that guy MarkJ he's a bad un, don't trust what he has to say, he sends people out in bath tubs. Anyway, he's an Aussie and we all know what they're like

I frequent this forum infrequently at times, and hit refresh every five minutes at other times. It seems like it takes dips into rudeness depending on the exact nature of the other people who are frequent readers, and how that rubs up against whoever makes up the core community at the time. Sometimes these niggles die away and sometimes they blow up, to the stage where people leave and never come back.

Really it just seems like a large social group, but without the benefit of body language and hormonal reactions that would normally temper situations in a face to face environment (benefit being fisticuffs are less painful online).

Overall its pretty civilized, except for the two hullers ....

Its also the best single repository of useful cruising boat and life info on the net, so something's working!
