Of course, Sea Dart was trucked up to Lake Titicaca from the Peruvian side - no papyrus raft for Tristan Jones! My bad. He did, however, not get to and go down the Amazon. This is from the Tristan Jones website:

Unholed whole hulls aren't wholly bad. It's when you have non-integer fractions such as 7/8 of a hull or 1-1/2 hulls that you're in BIG trouble!

Moderate irony and reasonable banter are fine with me; I think we can distinguish between hurtful behavior and ordinary venting, frustration, or silliness.

And I think people can state opinions based on a mix of direct personal experience, extrapolation from experience, and reasonably trustworthy sources. If someone states something that doesn't seem to be valid for the particular circumstances, then let's hope it'll get challenged and improved upon. I sail to learn and love a sport in which we can "learn the basics in a day ... and spend a lifetime trying to master it."

The guy who pointed out that TJ's exploits were exagerated is the same guy who will piss in a punchbowl, or overturn a board game when he is losing.

Truth or not, that man could sure spin a yarn.

His are among a few books that I tend to re-read, Heyerdahl is another.

Kon-tiki was my first sailing book....got it in 1959/60....read it every coupla years
