Mixed into the years before medicine... worked at Burger King, drove school bus, carpet installater, warehouse worker, gas station attendant, milk deliverer, box factory worker, secretary, salesman, carpenter/contractor, newspaper deliverer, custom drapery installer... and probably another 1/2 dozen or so other jobs I can't (or don't want to) remember.

I had to redo all my undergrad as well. So, went back to school at 34 and I entered med school at 38.

I keep the likes of Ex-Calif in employment. Like I told one of them yesterday, the landing gear was too long, but I fixed it.

A long time ago I had to work for a living, maths/physics teacher, computer programmer, deck officer (merchant seaman), charter yacht skipper/cook, flight instructor, restaurant waiter.

I work so I can sail on weekends. I think that is what most people do, work during the week so they can afford their hobbies.

Sounds awfully familiar. I redid my undergrad begining at 35 and turned 40 during my first semester of med school. Being older had it's advantages. In med school most of the students thought I was a prof and during residency many in the hostpital thought I was an attending. I was the only HO who got away with wearing an aloha shirt in place of a white coat and tie.

Wow-I spend the first sunny day in Seattle in like 6 months on the boat today, sit and take a rest and come across this thread! Great reading and very interesting.

For myself, early years were many service jobs while being a professional student (valiantly maintaining the student deferment during the mid-late 60's!). Scraped a lot of boat bottoms, Painted more than a few, was a charter sportfishing mate, captain, bough and rebuilt classoc wooden motor yachts (mostly Trumpy's for those in the Annapolis area). Went to law school late in life, spent ten years as a criminal defense attorney in DC, keeping the bad guys out of jail. Met a 48' Kadey-Krogen at the Annapolis Boat Show about 1989 and decided I needed to save for one. Law and real estate investing in Seattle for the last 12 years, finally got the boat and am now in training for all-around general boat maintenance in exotic places position. Pay sucks but what job satisfaction!

2 occupations that could most easily afford cruising - especially in these times - Bankers and Politicians - are not listed (and by trickle down economics - strippers).
Then again cruising has elements of escapism. They have no need to escape. And poorer people can't...

Part-time mechanic (european cars) to pay the bills through high school and college. Discovered computers and went into engineering. Got into start-ups and the business side of technology, then had the opportunity to get out and did. Now I'm restoring cars, playing with boats, and serve on the boards of two for-profits and two non-profits.

Assuming one is really good and popular enough to cover the usually obligatory stage and tip out fees demanded by the establishment (so one can get up on stage and perform) and still have enough left over to live on and set aside for savings, taxes, etc.
