This is a thread about the sixties.

Love your avatar. Is that a lime peel or green tennis ball?

This thread got me to join so kinda want it to keep going.
So blame Newt for me being here.
This is the off topic area of the forum right?
Well, I am definitely a bit off.

How come we didn't pass this down?

See point 3.

Generations are like children. As much as we wish they would learn from our experience, sadly they mostly have to learn on their own.

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.

Re: What did we Learn from the 60's?

I grew up during the 50s and 60s. What did I learn?

Well, you lived even though you didn't wear a helmet while riding a bicycle.
It was fun to run around outside and build forts...you didn't "need" a computer.
Not wearing sunscreen means keratoses and basal cells, later in life.
Candy corn had no calories.
Real butter was good for you...fried chicken was even better.
Wearing a bikini was a real shocker, especially for Dads who had daughters.
Pierced ears were the sign of a savage.

There was much more that I learned, but somehow (by the grace of God) I survived and became one of those stodgy elders. *sigh* Oh well....

Re: What did we Learn from the 60's?

Wasn't there (60's) myself, but from reading about it and observing the 00's I've learned that wealth and power are pretty well entrenched. They've actually convinced enough of the poor and disenfranchised that it's in their best interests to leave them rich and powerful. Our species can be really stupid, lol.

I'm no angry young man. I was fortunate enough to be born into some wealth and power, while being smart and educated enough to hold and add to it somewhat. I don't have children, nor do I want any. I really only care about the next 80 years or so (just being honest). I also confess to having a perverse curiosity to see just how badly we're capable of screwing our habitat.

I wish the poor ("poor" = bottom 95%) the best, but I'm not optimistic. Even if they did vote, they seem to be collectively too stupid to vote in their own best interests. I throw them my vote out of conscience, but I'm just one guy.

Game on (and on).

Re: What did we Learn from the 60's?

We learned that steel wheels on skateboards and roller skates were a bad thing, but steel edges on skiis were a good thing.

We learned that banana seats and high riser handlebars on Swinn Stingray's were cool.

My sister's learned that leaving the bulb on in the Easy Bake oven was bad.

I learned that semi molten plastic in my Vac- U- Form gave you cool little boats and also third degree burns.

Silly Putty bounced really good but tasted really bad.

Dad always won at Monopoly.

Ashtrays in cars were mandatory but seat belts were optional.

Barbi and Ken were missing some parts

Re: What did we Learn from the 60's?

What do I remember of what I learned in the 60's:
-There were other places that grew great dope besides Mendocino
-lines are for boats, ropes are for sex
-There were other places that grew great dope besides Mendocino
-under age girls look older than their age
-There were other places that grew great dope besides Mendocino
-you can't remove a fish hook from your hand sober
-There were other places that grew great dope besides Mendocino
-I forget the rest... Phil

Re: What did we Learn from the 60's?

What we should be commenting on is the steady decline of our civilization. (And sailing skills) Much like the Romans and Chinese (sailors) empires before us.. We allow the erosion of the pillars of society (ketch rigs) and the eventual decline and fall will result. (All fin keel boats)
