What (Boatie) Movies Have You Seen Recently

If you like a good treasure hunt yarn complete with wild New Gunea Natives throwing spears and tying up the heroine, nefarious Brits, heroic Yanks and nefarious Yanks check out Crosswinds (1951) - a yankee schooner captain comes to New Ginuea in search of work for the boat, "She's my home, my job and my mistress all wrapped into one package." - Heroine (slighlty dmaged of course) "what are you running away from?" - "I'm not running away. I just dont live my life in all the hubub stopping at red lights and waiting for green lights." - "see? You are running away. From society and all its rules" - LOL. The dialog sounds a lot less cheesy coming from the big screen...

Watched "Dove" - worth a look but pretty naive and highly innacurate. Makes up for it with cool sailing scenes, a couple of nice storms and a dismasting scene. There are only two cats in the movie. I think because Gregory Peck didn't want Graham to look like a weird loner cat-boy, which he probabnly was. They did touch a couple of times on his psychosis a bit. Its also a good answer for how small a boat can I go in, even if the boat in the film is a Ranger 23 - a lot of scenes look like an advert. And after a total rebuild of the boat it has the exact same sails. Ho hum...

What hace you seen lately?

I know for real boating people, this one doesn't count -- however, Capt'n Ron is my all time favorite. Hard for me to watch anything that isn't a comedy.

Summer Rental with John Candy, In the end he wins the yacht race by flying his pants on the mast and crosses the finish line in his underwear.

The barnacle is an Irwin 38. I used to have almost the same one, but a couple of years newer and not a centerboard.

Captains Courageous - must be the 1937 Spencer Tracy film. Best footage of Gloucester schooners ever seen.

Re: What (Boatie) Movies Have You Seen Recently

Ok.. well first and foremost i'd have to point to the very obvious Master and Commander: Far side of the world. However annoying it is that they felt that they had to change the vessel which "Surprise" was pursuing from an American privateer to a French Frigate (as not to offend movie goers) it's still a very noble effort of capturing Patrick O'Brians top notch novels.

That said, I really enjoyed Riddle of the Sands - especially the part when Carruthers changes slowly from his initial shock and affront from the size and cramped quarters of Davis's boat to the point where he's sat amidships next to the mast with a pipe in his mouth looking completely content with life!
