I was listening to my guitar playing as the sun set behind a huge pair of cumulonimbus. Then crickets chirping. Schools of fish being chased around the anchorage. And the german couple in the next boat making dinner. Then I heard mosquitos so I moved inside the boat. Now I hear the potatoes simmering for the curry. And the water lapping on the rocks.

I stopped at two Pernod cocktails...so I don't hear any strange voices in my head tonight.

I generally listen to compositions by Nobuo Uematsu. Pretty famous Japanese composer who earned his stripes on the Final Fantasy video game series, for which he composed all the music for something like 20 years.

Some of his pieces are really quite beautiful. Best composer of the modern day, in my opinion.

This is so dependent on mood weather and boat movement.

ranging from peer gynt, through beethoven, to celtic music (enya, clannad etc) and coldplay, and even Ludovico Einaudi.

I sometimes get a hankering for operatic duets

occassionally folk or blues are required. Thank goodness for Ipods.

Indeed. One of the best items of gear I have installed on my boat is an Alpine Ipod head unit. An old 40 gigabyte Ipod with almost my entire music collection lies in the nav table, connected to the Alpine with a cable. It's great, especially since where we sail we are usually out of reception range for any FM radio stations.

After working indoors for a good part of my career, I prefer the sound of silence, or close to it. Most times I'm listening to the wind in the rigging, the sound of water sliding or lapping the hull, or the rain on the deck.

I carry an old hard drive iPod that has most of my music on it. It's got a variety of genres and decades. I'll play that through the car stereo when we have guests or the mood suits me. The SSB also gets usage as I listen to the shortwave broadcasts at night.

But mostly I enjoy the silence.

A good point, but 24/7 silence is too much of a good thing.

I also looked at the storage capacity and weight issues, and have established a decent audio book library rather than cluttering my shelves with books. It also means that I can "read" a book at night without ruining my night sight, and while still keeping a good look out.

As a side benefit, an audio book takes a lot longer to finish a book than when I read it (cursed speed reading capability)

It was nice to wake up and see that there are real people here, I am a metalhead from way back so classical doesn't faze me, infact it is nearly as complicated as playing metal
