Video of Russian Warship Ripping Up a Somali Pirate Vessel

Pretty graphic. No body parts or anything of the sort, but they opened up on them with basically every weapon onboard. I'm not cheering it along, but thought it was relevant.

Looks like this qualifies as a "mother ship" as there were some smaller skiffs along with it.

Re: video of russian warship ripping up a somalia pirate vessel

I bet they got the passengers off and blew up the boat to sink it rather than leave it or tow it. So, much of that was just a training exercise.

Pretty cool video, though.

On another note: it made the Russians look like a bunch of rednecks out on a squirrel shoot (sorry to all the rednecks for the example).

I'm glad they got the chance to shot thier guns. They needed the practice as they can not shot worth crap for a warship!

Surely the details of this incident must be varified somewhere.
If not, we could be viewing russian pirates killing innocent civilians.

Fire away (pun intended)

Re: Video of Russian Warship Ripping Up a Somali Pirate Vessel

Video shows date of 4 June 2010. As I remember the news reports at the time, the Somalis were removed from the larger boat before it was sunk by gunfire. Then the Somalis were placed back in one of their skiffs and set free to find their own way home as best they could. The Russians said they 'lost sight' of the skiff soon after setting the Somalis adrift.

Re: Video of Russian Warship Ripping Up a Somali Pirate Vessel

I doubt the russians killed anyone unless it was prior to the video when they "arrested" them and took them prisoners...if I remember there is an international task force there and the russian ship was probably under orders and scrutiny.

Anyone that has ever shot various ordinance fron a vessel would know what you saw is typical for even the best gunners and weapons.

The USCG has done the exact same thing with hundreds if not by now thousands of drug boats all over the Caribbean, Atlantic and Pacific.

And yes the russians were having fun doing it...it's not often you get to use your expertise on something other than in an excercise.

I say fake. Cheap editing, cheap music, cheap everything.

No proof those guys were even Russian. Provably some target practice exercise.

Re: Video of Russian Warship Ripping Up a Somali Pirate Vessel

It's the same incident that is referred to by BBC in this news bit: BBC News - Freed Somali pirates 'probably died' - Russian source

And by official Russian news station: Russian sailors release Somali pirates - Defense Ministry source | Russia | RIA Novosti

Russia has a tough policy against hostage takers as displayed by several incidents with Chechens (the biggest was a whole theatre, 200+ people, taken hostage; the gov't, instead of negotiating, successfully attacked... with some casualties). I guess they're using a similar approach with Somalian hostage takers.

It's interesting that Somalian government approved Russian Navy actions.
