Re: Typhoon Haiyan

They're calling it the strongest tropical storm to make landfall in history-ever. It broke the scale.

Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms ever seen, hit the Philippines with record force – Quartz

Re: Typhoon Haiyan

We expect the remnants to hit us here in Hainan, just off the coast of Vietnam, on Sat/Sun. The model I looked at is predicting only 100 knot sustained in the Philippines. Wish I could view the videos you posted but the Chinese government blocks youtube.

Totally catastrophic.. Just trying to imagine what chance any boat would have in those conditions.

Already made landfall at 195 mph sustained. Predicted to still be category five when it hits Vietnam.

Re: Typhoon Haiyan

Unbelievable. It looks like a storm on Jupiter.

"The storm (known as Yolanda in the Philippines) has officially maxed out the Dvorak scale, which is used to measure strength via satellites. That means Haiyan has approached the theoretical maximum intensity for any storm, anywhere."

Re: Typhoon Haiyan

This is an incredible storm, I've been through many and cannot imagine anything, land or sea, withstanding what Haiyan has been generating. I suspect the losses will be beyond any before.

Re: Typhoon Haiyan

in 2003 I lived through hurricane Fabian in Bermuda, - sustained 145mph winds. Good thing I was on land, but I cannot fathom what double that power would be like.
Praying that souls will be spared.

(Since you used that word "power")
The increase in power, and potential damage, going from those 145mph Fabian winds to the 200mph+ ones of Haiyan/Yolanda is about a four/six-fold+ increase in power, not merely double.
(not that something like a Cat5 Fabian is ever minor).
The comparison is from 'just' a Cat 4/5 hurricane to something well off the scale: Tropical cyclone scales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .
Like you, I find it unimaginable.

"Wind power in an open air stream is thus proportional to the third power of the wind speed; the available power increases eightfold when the wind speed doubles." Wind power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
