Top 5 Regrets of the Dying.

Since I retired at 48 and have plunged around the oceans I have often been thrown into conversations with people who would like to go cruising but can't for one of a myriad of reasons... I've heard them all and all are total BS. Ok some are reasonable... All are reasonable at the time of saying it.

According to the article, on people's deathbeds a top regret seems to be:
"Suppressing feelings in order to keep peace with others".

Well, reading most threads here I think few CF members will have any regrets on that score

You are selecting for people who don't take risk .....

I am getting to the age, if i have not already arrived there, when perhaps i should be thinking about this. If i think long and hard at the moment my biggest regret would have to be not joining this forum earlier in life and reading all the "bluewater" threads. Had i done so i would not have gone to sea in any of the boats that i did and not put my life in so much peril. I would have stayed ashore being ultimately safe until i could get my hands on a Robert's Spray.

I feel totally guilty about enjoying my sailing now. The knowledge that i have been totally irresponsible whilst enjoying myself has spoilt all my memories and will now have to hope that i am related to Shirley Maclaine and get a chance to do it right next time.

Having had one parent pass while in hospice care and another in the same "life care" community, I know that the population in these establishments is skewed. Overwhelmingly female, the males that are there (are very popular and) were either risk adverse or felt meeting the needs of family was #1. I seem to recall the common occupation was accounting or bookkeeping. None seemed to have any risky hobbies.

As Olaf said, the sample is very biased. None of the seniors I met ever wished they had not abused their body so much to avoid arthritis issues.

Me???? I assure you that they will not be interviewing me in palative care!!! You Brits make it sound so nice....

So you are kinda say that risk takers (us) would not hang around in palliative care waiting to die, we would die at home, or hopefully, on board?

My mum is in a nursing home and I have already made the decision I will die in a tent in some national park of starvation beause i am too old to get to the shop before I die in one of those places.

I have already told my kids not to look for a nursing home for me, I probably won't need one. Having been "turned off" by one well meaning doctor, I'm not of a mind to give another a chance to finalize the deal.

Mark, If you go to Denali or Yellowstone, the rangers there might find a bit of you left. The bears and wolves in both parks rarely turn down a free meal.

It is not worth it having regrets on your death bed. Think of something you liked about life, relive the best moments, talk to loved ones if you can, look out the window, watch a movie you always wanted to see. The past is gone. Why worry about it? Does you no good.

Most people are just dead scared when they are dying. Except for those who got doped with morphine or other drugs.

Hi, everyone,
No one can tell how he or she will die--because life gets in the way of our choices. However, many years ago, on the way to a Master's Degree in Psychology, we used to talk (in the courses relative to dealing with elders) about people's regrets about what they had not done. FWIW, I think that's right. We come to grips with what we have done, whether or not we are proud of it, but we can regret not doing sooner what we have now lost the ability to do. This certainly applies to me. At the moment, I am an "n" of 1. Anybody else out there who has regrets?

My grandmother was a Jew in Europe during WWII. She grew up in Austria and had a charmed life until Hitler showed up. She fled and ended up hiding in an Italian convent pregnant with my mother with my baby uncle. Rather than flee she chose to stay in Europe to organize resistance groups.

She traveled across the Atlantic to a "camp" set up for Jewish refugees in upstate New York. Even though she got out of Europe there was a decent level of segregation going on in America at the time. My grandmother was not permitted to leave for just under a year. My mother was born in that camp.

Anyway, I asked my grandmother weeks before her death what she thought I should do with my life. "Travel, and have fun," is what she said.

She was a major cause of me shirking everything else and focusing on an adventurous life.
