9 carat gold can shine just fine and is used because the 14, 18 and 24 are too soft.
It would be pretty good if we didn't give a damn and just went with 24 carat and to hell with the expense. (I suspect my buttons, although nice and shiny, wouldn't stand too close scrutiny!)

I appreciate your point. Written communication, lacking visual feedback, is quite different from face to face communication, and should be practiced with more consideration than is too often evidenced in online forums. Civility is becoming a lost skill. The guy with the rude one-liners may be tolerable or even amusing in a bar, where one can see his face and interpret his intent (and move away from him), but he is annoying in an online forum where thousands of readers do not know him and can't see him. The value of this forum lies in those who share knowledge, experience and opinions in a courteous manner, particularly when in disagreement.

Zeehag, you may have a point about alleged 25' yachts. The smallest yacht I've ever seen is probably the Alerion 26, which really IS eye-candy.

Of course a real yacht club doesn't go by the blazers or buttons, but rather by the Bretton-red color of the trousers, no khakis need apply. <G>

I'm with Jamujoe and Idorakeeper - heat doesn't make light! Truly free discussion is encouraged by civility and recognition ot the fact that all of us occasionally (or in my case, more than occasionally) make mistakes, or say something stupid.

In time, some of the frequent contributors may seem to be friends (or 'virtual' friends), who we are confident can take a quick retort - who can and will dish out as good as they get. On the other hand, for new members we cannot fairly make that assessment and should surely exercize some caution. Bear in mind, there can be a very fine line between being pithy/witty and being insulting (I know as I am rarely accused of being the former).

Just remember that many of us are here not only to socialize, but to share our experiences and to learn from the experiences of others. And while this is no more of a virtual classroom than it is a virtual yacht club, IMO some civility goes a long way towards encouraging learning and the free expression of ideas.
