Thieves Amongst Us ?

Just returned from Honduras where I met a middle-aged Canadian couple who had been cruising the Carribean for many years on their 40' mono. Got on the subject of security. I was very surprised when they told me that "by far the majority of the thefts that occur against cruisers are commited by cruisers themselves!". I had never heard this before. Although they had no empirical evidence to support their opinion they were adamant about it. I wonder how many others share this opinion.

Seriously, I very much doubt if it's common but human nature is human nature, it stands to reason that some people who choose this lifestyle may be dishonest. Sad but true.

isreal,only place iv'e ever seen people use ssteelstrops and pad locks to secure fenders to guard rails

I wouldn't say "Cruisers" but ask around at any large maria. You'll find stuff gets lifted quite often!

Would not say it does not happen, but I think if you took the issue to a paranoid level you might just attract the attention you are trying to avoid!
