So really what we're saying is we're tired of the same durned opinions over and over again. We have come up with some new ones ...

The other day I was out sailing and realized I was moving to fast! Really, there was no way I could walk that fast! I started thinking, what if I reduced ballast and moved it higher in the boat so if I got too much sail out she heel right over and then I'd slow down right? Getting there's half of the fun so why rush?

When forums mature, there are dead horses everywhere.

My question is what happens to a forum when every question has been asked and answered a hundred times?

Does the character of a forum change when it is mature?

One way for a forum to evolve is to have members put up their sailing stories, and then have others comment on those stories. The forum has more of a blog like character.

I participate in one cruising forum, one multihull forum, and two four wheel driving forums. Each one is in a different stage of evolution.

I find that my participation varies according to where the forum is in it's life cycle.

I wonder where Cruiser's Forum is heading in the next five years?

Perhaps we should use this thread to create a CF FAQ. I will volunteer to write up one or two FAQ entries if others are interested in taking others and moderators are willing to post.

It seems like we should have a FAQ. If nothing else it will help distill the knowledge on the forums for people who come asking FAQ type questions. Currently they do not really get good answers often, which is a shame since so much great info is here.

yeah, without carring over the vitrol that some of these horses carry on their backs, articles about these eternal topics would be excellent additions to the sailing wiki!

I have seen the wiki, but that is very different from a FAQ. The FAQ is aimed at first-time posters to read before they post. It needs to be presented to them with a "read this before posting" sign. That is what prevents five people a week from posting "what is the best blue water boat"?

Even worse some of those 5 people get ignored or ridiculed and leave CF before they even get a change to start. A simple FAQ can prevent this from happening and give them the collective knowledge of CF they are looking for.
