Re: The Top 10 Dead Horses

None of these are tired topics, just very common topics and still worth discussing....well, most of them.

Standard 12 volt lead-acid batteries versus all the other types.

Types of hull materials.

Raytheon, Simrad, Garmin, Furuno or someone else.

Anchoring techniques.

My engine spews blue/black/grey/white smoke or leaves a sheen on the water.

What size and type of filter for my fuel?

Mac or Windows computer for navigation.

Bringing animals in and out of countries.

Documentation/registration problems.

Anchoring in Florida.

Humorous examples of why the opposite sex is so horrible.

Rules of the Road debates. (There should not be any debate here.)

What is the best lightning protection?

Dinghy debates.

What is the best way to get rid of the mold?

Clearing customs.

How do I find an honest or good yacht broker?...or my Yacht broker is treating me like dirt.

Is AIS any good and for what?

Whats the best way to make a wire termination?

Tinned versus non-tinned wire.

Flag etiquette. Is it okay to fly a pirate flag?

Boat owner versus diver wars.

Boat owner versus harbormaster wars.

Boat owner versus dog on dock wars.

Boat owner versus big government pollution regulation wars.

Boat owner versus boat yard owner wars.

Slapping halyards.

Four-stroke versus two-stroke.

Clogged or air in the fuel line debates.

What size propeller do I need?

How hard should I run my engine?

Lube oil debates.

Packing material versus dripless.

Who makes the best chart software?

Wheel or tiller?

Spraying or brushing on paint.

What type of topside paint.

Types of bottom paints.

To varnish or to use teak oil.

The best method and the best varnish for varnishing.

ReAL KrUizeRs vs the rest of the world

Usually to be found stuck in 1972, and refuse to admit that 1972 wasn't really like the 1972 they "remember".....or that a lot of the changes since then have actually been progress.

I thought we had that one nailed down Dave?

A cruiser is someone who cruises as much or more than yourself.

And in much the same way as we do, or in cool places we'd like to get to.

OK. My first contribution to the FAQ!

Re: The Top 10 Dead Horses

As the "new guy" to this forum, I think the FAQ would be great. I have been fortunate over the past few months to read some fantastic threads. The one about 2 months ago about furling mains was great. After reading that, I have a confidence that the failures are either operator errors, or sails that have stretched(draft?). BUT a new person jumping onto the forum may not find that thread. So they will ask the same question and cause a debate that may not attract the same spirited debate.

A FAQ, or a separate turn off on the front page for "classic threads" would allow newbies to read the pearls of wisdom on the various topics. Maybe one of the more seasoned folks could boil the thread down to the relevant issues. For example furling main.... Good things.... Bad Things.... causes of failure.

Bill

Oh yeah my vote is the circumnavigation one. The noted exception is comment about the war zone.

Yes..It's a downward spiral, no way to escape it.

I suppose when we run out of horses we can move on to skinning cats..

Re: The Top 10 Dead Horses

As the person who refactored the anchor article on Wikipedia way back when (which was promptly defaced by the Rocna representatives), I think any topic which attracts, uhm, attention on the forums is likely to attract what I call POVioring: a warrior defending xyr Point of View as the one true POV.

Just not sure it's the right venue for writing a nuanced and informative essay on controversial/perennial discussions.

oh, Well I didn't mean Literally skinning cats, I wouldn't literally beat a dead horse either..I guess to save the animals we could direct members to the

the..
"Everything except the kitchen sink" Thread

or the
"It's 6 one way, half a dozen the other" Thread

or the
"Make no Bones about it" Thread

or finally the
"Rome was not built in one day" Thread...

Re: The Top 10 Dead Horses

I thought this thread would be all about the top 10 anchors. Instead it sounds more like provisioning for cruising...horses or cats,(though zee prefers dogs).

Actually it shows that most people are adamant about what is working for them, their experiences. Also the tendency to discount what works for others.
