The GoPro & Video Thread

So as a sailor who has everything (except a boat in the water) I asked santa for a GoPro camera.

I must have been a good boy as he brought me the camera, extended battery, various suction, head and chest mounts and a nice camera bag. So far I have taken a lot of boring video of the living room and am looking forward to getting the boat back in the water and taking some video.

So how about it sailors? Share you YouTube links to your videos (GoPro or not) your techniques for getting good video. Some tips on what video editing software you use and so on.

So far I am finding that 2-3 minute clips taken with my iPhone is much more interesting than the GoPro so far but I think it is going to require some editing time to make better finished product.

For those interested my YouTube channel is ExCalif - There are a couple of sailing vids on there and I have my kid working on splicing some vid together and adding some music. If it keeps him of Facebook for 5 minutes it will be worth it.

So do I need a rail mount? I have seen some video from teh boom end that was kinda cool. How would one mount to the backstay?

BTW - The preview and control of the Hero3 with the iPad/iPhone is magic.

Good idea! I'll work on my GoPro videos.

For thrills the camera needs to be close to the action. And there needs to be action.

I have a Hero 2 and do wish it had the preview screen to know what I'm shooting is actually what I want. I have thought about getting one or two more positioned at different points around the boat once I actually get sailing.

My boat isn't in the water yet, but so far, with the GoPro I've only taken videos touring my boat.

BTW: Phone is HTC One X. Video is nice and I can take still photos from the video too from the phone.

I have the WIFI remote for my Hero 2, can see what the camera sees on my Iphone and have complete control over camera...Kewl...I haven't used it much yet but am looking forward to it.

Lol, I got a pair of GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition's for Christmas myself. But it'll be a few months before I'm posting video to this thread, unless it's video of me grinding in the boatyard with a cam bolted to my fullface!

I have the original Hero at the moment and plan to get the Hero3 at some point before I get back on the water. I'm going to buy a few spare mounts which will be useful on board and keep them on the boat.

I have a kite and will by a mount and one day try flying the gopro from it. I am planning to make a mount where I can hoist the gopro up the mast.

This video from last summer was shot mostly using the gopro.

I gave away gopro3 yesterday. Should have kept it. LOL We stuck it on the bow of my sons kayak and shoved him in a creek. The first thing he learned ....The water is cold. The second...He cant roll up, but he can get out fast. fun times....

I prefer our GoPro for cockpit shots because of the wide angle.

In our passage diary, most of the cockpit clips are from the GoPro. Sorry I don't have a shorter illustrative clip - this is 30 min long so you'll have to forward until you see a cockpit shot from the passage:

We've also had great luck zip-tying the camera to our kites while kiteboarding. I'm hoping to get up footage from that on our youtube channel this week. GREAT shots of the lagoons we were kiting in in the S Pacific

I like the Joby mount * for the ease with which I can move the GoPro around the boat.

How about that, I too got a GoPro 3 Black Edition with accessories for Christmas. Santa obviously wasn't paying much attention to me throughout the year, as I'm sure I was naughty this year

I also have a kite with a camera mount bought specifically for when sailing and 4WDriving in the sand dunes. Up to now I used my Olympus 1080SW Camera on the kite, but will be switching to the GoPro shortly.

Ex Calif:

I use the GoPro Hero2, Swann lifestyle, RCA Small Wonder and a Cannon Sure Shot for videos. I find using the RCA, Swann and Cannon easiest to use for above water video's. For underwater I find the Swann easier than the GoPro mostly because of the button programming of the GoPro. The Swan has two distinct buttons that allow you to use it for a still shots or video. I find that handy. That said I have done a number of shoots with the GoPro which does take excellent video despite it's quirky programming:
