Talking about Tools.

What's in YOUR wallet? Oops... Toolbox, I mean. Not asking about the usual stuff like cross-tip or flat-tip screwdrivers, spanners/wrenches, slip joint pliers and the like. Looking for those good ideas that make maintenance a tad bit easier. I'll start:

Yeah, okay... WD40. Should go without saying.

A paring knife (fruit knife) that has the tip bent sideways at 90 degrees. Useful when digging out the old caulking around portholes, cleaning the gunk from around the base-plates of stanchions, making a new gasket from an old sea-chart, etc.

Clear nail polish. Useful to waterproof a solder connection when shrink tubing is not an option (wrap with sticky tape before polish drys), or to delay the inevitable onset of rust on shackle threads and/or the like, or when you run out of "Loctite", etc.

Optional: Use bright red polish. Make a statement.

Plastic straws. Soft drink sized. Useful for emergency repair on a copper fuel line (couple of zip ties either end of the straw), or temporary wire repairs when out of shrink tubing.

Pencil type refillable butane solder iron. {Small can of flux, tube of solder.} What... you want to pay an electrician?

Handful of 12 & 24 VDC LEDs with built in 100 Ohm resister. {A few each red, amber, green.} YOU might carry proper spares aboard for various control panel indicators (etc) but your neighbor in the anchorage might only have spare beer.

Spare Barlow Sailing Shackle Knife. {Stainless steel, stout blade, shackle key & marlinspike.} Makes deck work easier/quicker, from splicing multi-strand line to sail changes, etc. Try not to buy the type that jumps overboard like mine tend to do. Or put it on a lanyard.

Bonus: Not a toolbox thing but keep a few of those Barlow knives in their original boxes - they make terrific last-minute gifts.

What little helpers have you added to your toolbox?

Make that 1000 ohm resistor unless you want to burn them out quickly.

Add: magnetic pickups, claw pickups and mirror on a telescoping stick.

Forget the flush cutters
The tool for this is a
Cable Tie Gun, 15 dollars and up on Amazon
Tensions and Cuts, single handed without
leaving a razor sharp barb.
If you use cable ties, this tool
will change your life

Talking about Tools.

Oddly enough, I get quite a bit of use out of my fish tape. I use it not only to ‘fish’ wires (as it was intended) but I’ve also used it to clean out through-hulls when getting in the water wasn’t an option. I’ve also used it to ‘fish’ reefing lines through our boom when I’ve failed to install ‘pull strings’. I’ve been surprised at how frequently I use it. It’s small and tucks away easily.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Re: Talking about Tools.

Whole mess of clamps, vasaline, a lighted inspection mirror (bought on a whim, now I almost can't live without it) tube of 5200, gause pads, cotton swabs, and an assortment of mallets (for mechanical agitation)

Re: Talking about Tools.

85 piece Stanley socket set.

Set of 12 Sidchrome ratchet ring spanners ( they are a bit dearer but have a thinner wall than most) which replace the set I had stolen by some barstewards off another yacht in Stanley, Falkland Islands.

2 sets Allan Keys... metric and imperial... which replace the ones.... and yes I know who did it....

One piece allen key/socket combo to make replacing the Volvo dripless shaft seal easier...

and half a ton of other tools....

Re: Talking about Tools.

WD40 is useless on a boat. T9 Boeshield, SuperLube and Lanacote.

I thought I had every tool I needed until last year:

ratcheting flex head box wrench set - great to get into those impossible to reach places

nut splitter - great for those impossible to remove little thingies and acorn nuts after you grind off the tops
