What's in YOUR wallet? Oops... Toolbox, I mean. Not asking about the usual stuff like cross-tip or flat-tip screwdrivers, spanners/wrenches, slip joint pliers and the like. Looking for those good ideas that make
maintenance a tad bit easier. I'll start:
Yeah, okay... WD40. Should go without saying.
A paring knife (fruit knife) that has the tip bent sideways at 90 degrees. Useful when digging out the old caulking around portholes,
cleaning the gunk from around the base-plates of stanchions, making a new
gasket from an old sea-chart, etc.
Clear nail polish. Useful to waterproof a solder connection when shrink tubing is not an option (wrap with sticky tape before polish drys), or to delay the inevitable onset of rust on shackle threads and/or the like, or when you run out of "Loctite", etc.
Optional: Use bright red polish. Make a statement.
Plastic straws. Soft drink sized. Useful for
emergency repair on a copper
fuel line (couple of zip ties either end of the straw), or temporary wire
repairs when out of shrink tubing.
Pencil type refillable butane solder iron. {Small can of flux, tube of solder.} What... you want to pay an electrician?
Handful of 12 & 24 VDC LEDs with built in 100 Ohm resister. {A few each red, amber, green.} YOU might carry proper spares aboard for various
control panel indicators (etc) but your neighbor in the anchorage might only have spare
beer.
Spare Barlow Sailing Shackle Knife. {Stainless
steel, stout blade, shackle key & marlinspike.} Makes
deck work easier/quicker, from splicing multi-strand line to sail changes, etc. Try not to buy the type that jumps
overboard like mine tend to do.
Or put it on a lanyard.
Bonus: Not a toolbox thing but keep a few of those Barlow knives in their original boxes - they make terrific last-minute gifts.
What little helpers have you added to your toolbox?
