I'm no tree hugger, but these bastards need to get a REAL JOB!
They already have a marina and a gambling casino and are exempt from US federal taxes and tons of other regulations which everyone else has to abide by.

WTF do they need with killing whales?????

Steve B.

But Steve, tell us what you REALLY think!

Unless you're a Dog in Asia :-(

I could bring the Japanese "scientific" whaling into the discussion, but that wouldn't be right now would it. ;-)

To me, certain animals that show signs of higher brain function, should be left to be admired, not slaughtered. Whales and Dolphins, Elephants etc etc. Even a Dog in my book. I maybe wrong, but I don't feel a Cow is quite that intelligent. But whatever man chooses to slaughter, it should be done as quickly and humainly as possible. And I am yet to see whales killed with either.

That's why I like deer hunting. No not the hunting just the controversy. With a cow it's clear. Cow = food. Chicken = food. Tuna = food. Dolphin = Flipper + Sea World

With deer, on one hand you've got Bambi. On the other hand you got a beer swillin' redneck in cammies and a high powered scoped rifle. He also wears a bright orange highway workers vest so some other Jethro doesn't accidentally shoot him. Which makes me wonder what the cammies are for? I love the look on the deer's face when they snap their head up and sniff the air. The camera shoots right over Jethro's shoulder at the 12 point buck that seems to be thinking, "Who the hell does that gomer think he's fooling. I can see him right there."

Oh and the code of honor is you don't shoot the doe during the rut. Just the bucks. Great! First time in a year I get laid and then, WHAM! Jed Clampett nails me because it happens to not be Bass season and I happen to be a guy.

So Steve? Why kill whales? Why kill deer? And how come no one truly cares that both T. Rex and the Sabre tooth tiger are extinct. Me, the kids and Fido would love to share the park with T Rex, sure we would.

Stay tuned, they have found the DNA, now they are working on building a full-size one. It will come to a park near you soon, very soon....

Pigs are smarter than dogs, but unfortunately they taste sooo good.

I just thought I'd throw my neutral standpoint in here. I personally don't like killing anything, however, there are several studies that show that vegetarians and vegans on average live shorter lives than people who eat a healthy amount of meat. There is some nutrition that just can't be gotten, or at least gotten as well from plants. I did the vegetarian thing for 2 years(started as just a challenge to myself), in the end, I gave it up because it was more trouble trying to not eat meat than it was just to eat it.

Given that, I think anything is fair game as long as the hunting is done sustainably and nothing is wasted and the kill is as humane as possible under the circumstances.

Hmmm, My physician seemed to think that I would live longer when I became a vegeterian. "What are you going to do with the extra ten years" was his quote. If you can find a study please let me know where to find it.

But the intent was not to start another climate change thread revolving around hunting but just to ask for opinions regarding the new story.

I have enough stress in my life now, without having to worry about having a 50/50 chance of eating or being eatin.

Something similar goes on here in Aus. The Aboriginies are allowed to hunt Dugong even though they are endangered. Apparently it's "traditional' to use aluminium boats and outoard motors in this hunt........

Why is killing a cow ok but killing a whale that is not endangered bad? As was said, the strange some animals are good to kill and others are bad just never has made sense to me.

As long as someone is not deliberately and pointlessly cruel in method and the animal in question is not endangered I could care less if someone kills them.

Another thing that baffles while I am on a rant.... why do so many view killing ANY animal as bad but murdering that spinach plant is just fine?

Plants are living creatures.... they eat, breath and reproduce. Why do they not have the same right as a animals in the minds of the vegetarian elite? Dang plant murdering hypocrites if you ask me. Picking on the least able to protect themselves.... plants have no advocates!

AS to the .50 cal machine gun thing and this whale.... baloney. If ma deuce had been used, the whale wouldn't be swimming away. Browning M2 .50 cal machine gun can tear down a cinder block building faster than an Al quada can say Allah Ackbar..... mr. whale wouldn't stand a chance. I am sure the article is incorrect and meant to refer to .50 cal rifle which would be an excellent weapon for killing a whale harpooned but not dead.

AS to Indian tribes and "reviving the old ways" and such..... what baloney. A number of native tribes had some really swell traditional ways, things like raiding neighboring villages, capturing and enslaving folks and eating others. Yea baby... Cannibalism! Lets hope they don't decide to revive any of these kinds of nifty traditions!

44,
I guess that if six guys in skin kayaks and stone harpoons wanted to go after a whale it would at least be a little more consistant with traditional hunting.

Wheels,
If they did manage to do the DNA T-Rex thing they would pick a really secure island off the coast of Panama. We wouldn't be able to get a permit to anchor. Oh yea, and they would all be female so they couldn't reproduce.

If we applied this to people and eliminated lower brain function, then there would be a lot more room at the quay for multihullers to tie up.

Aye, since lower brain-function is also tied to poor taste in vessels, one can expect the masses to go multi and stay busy bragging on the internet how smart they are, leaving the oceans to real sailors...

You are being very hard on yourself. Poor education is also to blame, surely.

I'm sure that if Australian aboriginies had to use real "traditional methods" to hunt, they would kill far fewer dugong. But frankly I don't think anybody should be allowed to hunt endangered species, regardless of their heritage.
