State of the Oceans - NOT a Climate Change Thread

With sympathy to the moderators I wish to make this post, not to start a venomous discussion, but to share a bit of sailing relevant news.

No need for discussion, I'd just wanted to share this info with other interested folks.

State of the Ocean.org - Research

Quote:
The International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO) is publishing a set of five papers on ocean stresses, impacts and solutions by leading international experts to present the key findings of the workshops it held in 20111 and 2012* in partnership with IUCN and its World Commission on Protected Areas. The purpose of these workshops, and the papers published today, is to promote a holistic, integrated view of both the challenges faced and the actions needed to achieve a healthy global ocean for the future.

The central messages from the workshops are that the risks to the ocean and the ecosystems it supports have been significantly underestimated; that the extent of marine degradation as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts; and that it is happening at a much faster rate than previously predicted.

The 2012 workshop additionally reviewed new material and evidence, available since the workshop in 2011, and concluded that the threats to the ocean were even faster, bigger and closer than the first workshop set out: faster with an accelerated rate of change, bigger in scale, and closer in time in terms of the impacts being felt.

hypeer, Thanks for the post and the caution. Certainly, there's no question that we need to be good stewards of our planet. Controversy regarding being aware is pointless, though we often need to defend against the pointless. Thanks again!

Mundis Ex Igne Factus Est

At least many of us have lived. "I pity the fool" who hoped there was a happy ending up yonder. Or were simply too fearful to make an effort.

Re: State of the Oceans - NOT a Climate Change Thread

Pretty simple really.

Too many humans.

Not enough water.

Solution = Fewer humans.

Now the hard part........

Who has a plan that will work?

I think that A guy named Adolph had a plan like that back in the 1930's & 40's. As I recall, it wasn't very popular & didn't end particularly well for him.

I've always thought the Gaia Hypothesis had merit. But it assumes a homeostatic (possibly a made-up word) optimal condition. That's what we humans have never had without natural predators. It probably didn't matter before with low populations but it may well now, and almost certainly will in the future.

I doubt that one can discuss the state of the oceans without discussing climate change.
