newbie to the group

Hi,
my name's David.
As I've just joined the group, as my first post, this is me . . . .

Born by the sea in Liverpool, England, I was on my dad's boat before I could walk.
Most weekends in summer, the family sailed along the English or Welsh coasts. Sun or rain, we enjoyed it all the same.

I'm now 60 & still love the sea as much; it's always been a part of my life.

In 1995 I started teaching dinghy sailing professionally (having gained RYA dinghy instructor, RYA powerboat licence etc).
8 hours a day, 6 days a week, 6 months a year for most of the following 8 years I was teaching in English, French & Spanish on Hobie Cats & lasers; in Asia, Africa, Europe & the Caribbean.
My spare time was spent on dive boats, dhonis, yachts, 60ft cats.

RYA coastal skipper & ICC papers followed, as did experience on a range of yachts & passages. Much of the Med, UK waters, trans-Atlantic, trans-Mediterranean, Malaysia, Thailand, Fiji, bits of the Caribbean, Australia.

What did I enjoy? - Cruising with friends, crewing with strangers, delivery runs (eg Tunisia to Spain; round Italy; coastal Australia). To me sailing is about people and places.

My skills? I'm told I am reliable, responsible, organised and thorough. I speak English, French, some Spanish, some German: and have found a smile works in any other language. I enjoy plotting courses. I can get along with most anyone. I only sleep 4 hours at night (which makes me popular for night watches!) I'm tidy on a boat, cook (as well as most Englishmen!) & am a bit of a handyman. I seem to be able to fix most things.
For example, some things I've fixed during last 12 months (4 different boats):
- replaced/repaired masthead lights
- stripped & repaired freshwater pumps
- stripped anchor winch
- refitted stanchions
- replaced head gasket off 100hp engine,
- repaired split exhaust elbow (7NM out at sea, it broke & gassed skipper!)
- removed / reseated portholes & hatches
- deep-cleaned areas extensively
- replaced interior lights with SMDs (latest LED lights)
- repaired davits
- fitted new davits (different boat)
- repaired inflatable dinghy
- worked on outboards
- misc plumbing jobs
- misc electrical jobs
- stripped down & - repainted exterior woodwork (five coats)
- updated DVD / TV system
- cleaned hull
- unblocked raw water intake
- changed raw water impeller
- new belts on engine & layshaft

I'm good with computers and most modern technology. Non-smoker. Wine drinker (in moderation and not when navigating), don't do drugs, don't gamble, no criminal or police record in any country.
English passport, international medical insurance, up to date vaccinations, clean driving licence.

I've been divorced for a l-o-n-g time: "permanent close friends" seem to work best for me. I'm not "desperately seeking a Ms Right" (and certainly not a "Ms Right for the Weekend"!) Travelling alone is OK, but I've found it's usually more interesting, more rewarding and more fun to share the experience with a like-minded person on the same wavelength (a.k.a. "soul mate", in Europe anyway).

My bad points? "English" humour, a back with a 50kg limit, a love of German music (thank goodness for headphones!)

(hope that's not too long a post!)
David

Hi there David,
you seem like quite the sailor. I tend to prefer English humor. Good Luck!

Re: SSSSM - Part Deux

Hi all,
I'm a kiwi living in Wellington, New Zealand. I love sailing and have lots of miles under the tiller, but so far all limited to local sailing around New Zealand. Am working towards selling up and sailing offshore in the next 12 months and would be wonderful to share that with someone.

Re: SSSSM - Part Deux

Speaking of looking for a mate, I guess it pays to advertise so here's a little about myself:

I should have done this before but I'm shy (really).

68 years old
5'11" tall (and at the age where I'm shrinking)
240 pounds (down from 260 and still working at it)
Definitely a furry bear type (hey, I'm warm in the winter)
Still have some of my hair (in the fashionable platinum color)
Have my own teeth (paid a pretty penny for them too)

Still love that moment when the sails start to fill and I can turn off the engine.
Still trying to learn how to play guitar.
Used to roadrace motorcycles until I crashed badly at Daytona in 2009.
Still dance but not as much as I used to (see "used to roadrace" above).
Still like to read actual books (as in dead trees).
Love most kinds of music (except rap and opera and anything else in a language I don't comprehend).

Financially secure (no money and no bills, now that's financially secure)
I've had so many occupations I should be able to write the great american novel, accountant, bartender, captain, and that's only the first three letters!
Actually I am a reliable sort of man, believe it or not.
Currently retired or unemployed, whichever you prefer (living on social security - see "financially secure" above)
Educated beyond my intelligence (flunked out of college but still ended up with a Juris Doctor).

Don't smoke.
Don't do drugs.
Do drink, usually red wine or beer (all things in moderation - including moderation)
Do not indulge in kinky sex (unless you want to)

Main asset is a 40' trimaran which is less than half my age lol.
Said vessel is not a luxury liner but she's functional (sort of like myself I guess).
Enjoy sailing the US east coast and the Bahamas.
Would enjoy it more with the right lady.

Currently meandering my way northward from Florida towards North Carolina, maybe the Chesapeake, then the Keys and the Bahamas late in the year.
Should be in St. Augustine in the next day or two, then Fernandina, Jax., St. Simons and onwards.

Any lady along the way (or elsewhere) who would like to meet up for a coffee or a cocktail or a sunset sail? If so please drop me a line.
Don't worry, animals and small children like me (well, most of them).

Have I mentioned I have a sense of humor?

You sound terrific to me! I'm tempted to fly across the country to give you the once-over. LOL!
