It's different for different length boats. Mine is 36'. I paid 500. + 54 + 55 for the canal and associated fees. But then there's the need to check in/out and get a cruising permit, which for me was just under 200. Also necessary are line handlers, tires for fenders and extra long lines, all of which you will need to pay for one way or another. I used (am using) an agent and he includes the lines and tires in his fee. You can use fellow cruisers who might volunteer to supplement your own crew (you need 4 in all besides yourself), so it may cost you nothing for that. You will however have to feed them and most host some kind of party (read food and lots of drink) at the other side to celebrate. My agent will provide line handlers, he uses students from the local university, for 90. each. I will hire at least 1 just to have a Spanish speaker aboard to communicate with the pilot.

Re: SSSSM - Part Deux
So Margo, that's running $1300-1400 + engine repair costs? That's gonna leave a mark in your bank account. Panama may not be one of your fondest memories when you write the book of your adventures. Still, glad to hear the solutions are now in train. Good luck.

Re: SSSSM - Part Deux
Add to all that, due to the long delay, I lost all my crew. Sigh.lots of folks her looking to crew, but they're all looking to go west into the Pacific. Nobody wanting to go north. Back to running an ad I guess. Or maybe I should go crew for someone else. Know anyone?

I had forgotten quite how clunky and limited FB is - will also take me a while to get a feel for the tone. As "Appropriate" for me is more learned behaviour rather than anything inherent - which is kinda why I like CF, I know where I am not meant to be .
Will see how I get on.......

Re: SSSSM - Part Deux
flyfly - no worries; you will find a crew. all you need is one crew so you will find and mexxico is uphill so less weight is better anyway.
SaltyMonkey still looking - no funtasy. Just 1.5 years of no cow field left salty monkey with empty milk pails. Need to fill them up again. Cows are nice here and field is green so monkey not worried.
Hurry up flyfly! Zeezee will have a party!!! YAYAYA!!!

Just saying if you play a gig in a rowdy establishment, make sure the chicken coop wire is secured well around your stage.

Re: SSSSM - Part Deux
On a somewhat serious note, I've gotten to know the more interesting characters here on CF much better on SSSSM.
I know which ones I'd sail 2500 nm out of my way to meet, and zee I'd sail around the world to meet.
