OK. I really, really need to finish the refit and get back in the water. Went out to the boat last night to work on the wiring and found a this guy moved on board while I wasn't looking.

Settled is right. Looked when my little buddy left the nest this morning and found three eggs. Too small to make much of an omelet so guess I'll let'em stay.

Is that a Carolina Wren? She could be a good addition to the boat,, they are fun to watch and eat a lot of bugs..

I do believe it is. We have several around the yard at home and they do stay busy all day long chasing bugs. Might be a new way to keep roaches off the boat.

Keep the thread updated with pics and current bird events. If you frighten off mom, be prepared to roll the eggs every few hours while you sit on them. After they hatch, proper bird formula every two hours around the clock.

Yes, they are ground foragers. They'll eat spiders as well.

This is why my boom end now has a rolled up towel stuffed in it. You can't imagine my expression when I gybed and a previously silent pair of little barn swallows burst out sending nesting material everywhere.

I don't think they got to egg-laying yet, so I suspect I wrecked their honeymoon.

Myh first thought was THAT IS WHAT BACKHOES ARE FOR, went away as I read more. Little birds dont hurt the environment much or at least I dont think they do. I may have introduced connecticute wood ants to Antigua in the late 80s. A few days after we arrived in Antigua we sailed to Green Island and went through the lazzerett and found a sailbag full of Connecticute wood ants and tossed it overboard with a line attached. I watcheded as many wood ants floated away, wondering if they would thrive on the island and create more problems than the natural bugs did? Another study in Darwinism. ____Grant.

I had already plugged my mast base when I found the beginnings of a nest there. Guess they showed me.

Doesn't it give you a good feeling to realise that, in spite of what we are doing to their world, some of them still trust us close by.

For the past two years I've had birds nests built in the spare tire of my Jeep. Last year I didn't find it until the birds were almost grown. I didn't realize it was a nest until one of the birds plopped out on the ground as I was cleaning it out.

This year i've found two. Fortunately I caught these before any eggs were laid.
