a story that happened to me.

I worked for a Tug Maintenance Company years ago.....

One other guy and I were installing a DD 6-71 into a small supply vessel.

It was a PITA because of the access and the way we had to pull the old one out.

Anyhoo, I went back to the shop for something and the boss said..."Is the job going OK....

I launched into a tale about this that and t'other....BLAH BLAH BLAH

He axed me again....Is the job going OK?....

Once again I responded "Blah Blah this that t'other......" on I rambled.

He said

When I ask you what time it is...I don't need to know how you built the*&$%#* clock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lesson has stuck wit me to today

Great story. Over the years I've learned/tried to try to ask questions in such a way that they only have 2 answers: YES or NO. But I rarely ever get a yes or no answer and instead get a nice long story. Which at the end of I still don't know the answer!

My posts today couldn't have helped this feeling you have. I'm having a bit of a spell between a couple jobs here and waiting on some parts for a wood stove (more long stories).

Ask a simple question about a simple issue - expect a straightforward response and trust it to be true (what's the time?).

Ask a simple question about a complex issue - expect a straightforward response, but don't necessarily believe what you're told. If you want to evaluate the veracity of the answer given, do some research of your own and gather information until you're comfortable making a judgement. Now, would you be happy to make your judgement based on partial or misleading information? Trouble is to know when you have enough information and when you've sifted out all the crap. It takes time and sifting effort. Just my thoughts.

In a similar vein.....Coming in to breakfast in the wardroom of a frigate at sea I (being a very junior officer at the time) politely said good morning to the First Lieutenant. He looked up testily from his bacon and eggs and said words to the effect "If I wanted a Weather Forecast, laddie, I'd have asked for it"!
