Solo Transat racer collides with freighter

A French yachtsman Maxime Sorel competing in The Transat Bakerly Solo Transatlantic Race from Plymouth to New York, was forced to abandon the race on May 3 after his boat crashed into a Russian freighter YASHMA .

You can't be awake and alert all the time, and at those high racing speeds, it's not surprising that collisions occur. I am surprised the racing boat did not dismast.

If I remember right he was on deck keeping watch and simply missed them at night.
