Re: Solo Sailing the Everglades wilderness waterway

The bug net will NOT solve the problem. Competent swamp skeeters sting THROUGH the hammock.

There is text cell service is 90% of ENP. Type the text, put phone in the gear hammock of your tent and 5-10 min later it will usually go through. All while showing no bars of service.

I have had SPOT devices fail on me. Be sure to seal the door of the device with some dielectric grease on the door to seal out the water!

Re: Solo Sailing the Everglades wilderness waterway

I have spent quite a lot of time in the Everglades, and in boats cruising through and around them. The mosquitoes and no-seeums are the worst there that I have ever seen. They are the primary reason why I will never go back, except to anchor out on the way back and forth from the Gulf coast to the Keys. And even then I anchor way off shore and pray that the prevailing winds will help keep them away from me. They are venomous and merciless. No mas. Also, in addition to the crocs, alligators and bull sharks you now have to watch out for pythons. They grow to 20 feet, are great swimmers and will eat even good size gators. The state of Florida has a bounty on them but they are too numerous and too smart and there is no chance of ever controlling them. No more overnight Everglades boating for me.

Anchored in Whitewater Bay now 5:00 pm. Cool with nice breeze. No mosquitoes yet. ATT data service works. No voice phone.

Unless this cold front comes through, best to hang a new IV bag to avoid dehydration

Re: Solo Sailing the Everglades wilderness waterway

What a trip. To be honest I only used the sail for about 10 miles collectively. The last 2 days saw a front roll through that sent 15-25 Kt winds first from the north and then from the east. It was a bear to paddle through for the end of the trip.

Here are some fun shots though.Click image for larger version

Re: Solo Sailing the Everglades wilderness waterway

I have a bunch of videos that I’ll go through and post onto YouTube or something. In the end it was an amazing experience. I do have some edits to my gear list and will be sharing that later.

Glad to hear that you were able to complete the trip successfully. I'm sure you must have had some adventures along the way.
