I was speaking of the book and your boats namesake "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" and trying to make a funny as Reepicheep was a mouse with a big heart but a small sword. Oh that's right, all Sci Fi downwind, oops sorry.. lol

I'd put a couple of the flogging a Dead Horse smilies in here if I knew how to do it - BUT, I notice that most of the smokers in this thread (even, dare I say it, The Illustrious Gord) are somewhat defensive/apologetic in their postings. This is a shame ! Be as nasty to them as they are to you, say I! Go on the offensive: Meanwhile, Paint Your Boat Pink and whilst you are at it, recruit a goat or two to crew with you.

(I'm going to put my head below the parapet for a couple of months now, I think and do some sailing)

Both will probably die within a few years, and my father can never enjoy an ocean passage with the son he taught to love sailing. All I can do is take him out for a daysail, and bite my lip as he chain smokes on the lee. I can also look forward to the day (soon) when they each in turn subject me to watching them die a smokers death, their lungs filling with fluid while they suffocate violently. All thanks to that wonder drug.
My mother who never smoked died of inoperable liver cancer in her mid 60s, and I watched her die the way you envision your parents dying...she taught me how to die bravely and without fear. My dad smoked until he had a heart attack that scared the s#&t out of him, and then died some 25 years later from a broken blood vessel in his head at 91. Some people accept that dying is a natural part of living, and try to enjoy their time on this earth before they go. Other have an enormous fear of death because it reminds them that they're mortal.

My grand parents smoked and it was that smell combined with leather seats and petrol that made me constantly car sick as a child.
I watched my step grandfather cough his lungs out in his dying years when he had emphysema and cancer, after he smoked 60 a day all his life.
As a kid, its the one enduring memory of illness i have that effected most of the older people I knew.
Since we know that everyone dies what sickening thing are you going to die from?

Even though we have our NHS in UK, its an increasingly contentious issue as money gets tight and various depertments look for ways to save money or score political points.
If we wanted health care reform like the Brits have, we would have pushed for it decades ago, but we want something better.

Sorry, Anj, I get all wound up when people tell me what to do. As we have what I call a "self-cleaning gene pool" (at least I thought that til I saw the movie "Idiocracy"), all us smokers and the drinkers will all die off eventually....
Along with everyone else that doesn't smoke or drink.

You smokers,
please accept my sincere apologies for trying to wish/educate you about how to live a long and healthy life.
It is your right to live or die as you chose.
kindest regards John A

ps this evening I think I'll put a block on receiving any more post from this worthless debate.

So those that smoke thats why I want you to stop.

Now you got me going.

I don't like all those butts all over the place either (I smoke), and I get on any smoker I see do those things...makes the rest of us look bad. Smokers don't cause as many brush fires as illegal alien camp fires.

Better? Errrrrr.........just to say that the Brits do have private healthcare available, pretty much on the same basis / same capabilities as in the US.

Just that we also have the NHS. Whilst we can't opt out of paying for the NHS (nor can we opt out of paying for defence or roads etc - just like in the US?, except in the UK we don't object to paying for the Army and Roads on the basis that it be socialist to do so )........but anyone can opt out of NHS treatment. Those with money can go private. those with no money can go dead...........in practice even those who can afford to go 100% private will mix & match via the NHS. Hell, even the next PM (Right winger, beleived to be worth IRO £30 million) used the NHS to treat / provide ongoing care for his disabled child - and that's from a fellla whose first policies I suspect will include legalising the trading of Grandmothers & Orphans and returning small boys to the Chimney cleaning business........kinda like a Republican, except with a knowledge of geography and history

However I will concede that Dentistry (NHS or Private) has not really caught on over here

DING! Goes my inbox again just when my Maoist cell group and I had gotten back to work on our plans to sneak more non-smoking illegal aliens into the country. We lure them across the border from Canada with promises of cold retail beer sales, and then they fall in love with our dental care and we have them for life. Someone make a note to teach them about fire pits! Not being smokers they don't know how to handle fire properly.
