I wasn't getting personal. With all the talk on the supposed bullcrap science on second-hand smoke, you might have smoked in the car with your kids because you sincerely believe it's not harmful. So I didn't "automatically" do a damn thing. If anything, I'm hoping to "lump you in" with the smokers who actually prefer not to share their habit with others due to proximity. So please don't lump me in with the Puritans. We all have bad habits...mine just aren't airborne, except on Chili Night, maybe.

My parents both smoked in the car when I was growing up (in the late '60s/early '70s). In a fricking Volkswagen with the windows rolled up. My sister still has chronic bronchitis...and while I can't prove a correlation, I sure know she didn't have it until several years of hotboxing it involuntarily with my now-dead folks.

I will ocasionally will smoke a pipe (once every month or so). I hate seeing cigarette butts laying around (I am a clean freak). No one can argue that smoking is bad for you.

But, what it come down to me is a liberty issue.

I owned a restaurant, I did not allow somoking, but it was my descion. But had I allowed smoking, so what. It is not the goverments business. They did not make my morgage payment or insurance payments. If someone didn't want to come to my place of business because of the smoking, thats up to them. Just as I had some people who wouldn't come because of my no smoking policy. It amazes me that we allow the goverment to tell us what we can do on private property. It will eventually be illegal to smoke anywhere, because everyday we allow the goverment to take another small bite out of our liberties.. Eventually the elephant will be eaten.

How long has it been since the goverment gave us more freedom?

I see this as a very clear choice of the rules imposed on a boat by the resident skipper and crew, and a choice of whether to visit or not

If the people in a boat want to smoke that is their concern.
If people dont smoke, but visit their vessel, that is their choice.

I dont smoke (anymore) and will only accept people smoking on the upperdeck downwind on my boat. Again as a smoker visiting my vessel - those are my rules, make up your own mind if you want to visit.

Take issue my friend. What about the non smokers, whose freedom for fresh air is being taken away, or the butts that smokers throw away to pollute my beach space. Take a walk down the beach, street, harbour or Ayers Rock, the biggest mess is always from cigarette butts.

"Back in the day" when smoking within an office* the occassional person would complain about 2nd hand smoke, I would say they owed me money then


*even I would not want to work in a smokers office anymore - hell, I can't even smoke in my own offices ...........I guess if I worked harder I could afford somewhere with a covered smoking balcony .........but I ain't that bothered
