We all have things we can accept or not, I personally don't mind the sound of some slapping halyards but am intolerant of people who run their generators at night. The thing is though that its not about yourself, my parents were considerate people and taught us from a young age to think about how our actions impact others, unfortunately a lot of folks didn't get that memo and only think of themselves.

Apart from the annoying sound, slapping halyards mean movement. Movement means chafe. Its poor seamanship.

Slapping halyards are the sound of money in the bank.

For the riggers, and the painters, and the chandleries, and the salvage teams who get to raise the boats that have mysteriously been sunk after they made too much noise for too damned long.

You guys are cry babies. Halyards chafe that's funny. Most you guys have new halyards that will out last you. If you do not like noise then stay in the nursing home. Life is noisy. Generators are a different story. I would not run one at night. A little clanging ha. Do you want the waves to stop moving, and the gulls to be quiet. Thank goodness I don't anchor around you guys. I would have to buy a power boat and blast by full throttle blasting 50 cent. That's a rapper if you old timers haven't heard. I just got back in and they were lightning fire crackers. Imagine that how rude. Lmao I guess when you guys motor sail by and I get the middle finger I know why. That's the cool thing about a boat if you have a douche bag neighbor then you can pull anchor and find a cool one.

But I've always felt that there are three things you DONT throw your leg over.

My Scotter, My Boat, and my Lady..(in that order) and tattoos and a bad haircut dont seem to bug me much..

This is the one that always gets people riled up.

I am sorry but if I you come aboard my boat to put out a fire or stop it sinking, I may thank you.

If you come aboard for your convenience or even to put out that fire it is trespassing and it is illegal.

Last time I checked slapping halyards were not illegal.

And if I do catch you on my boat there won't be a fist fight or any drama. I will simply record the facts, report all kinds of expensive stuff stolen and hand the video over to the police.

Jesus - How can people justify trespass because of a halyard slap? Leave a nasty note clipped to the lifelines or something...

You're right. Makes about as much sense as trespassing because of halyard slap

Some people just don't get it. Maybe if they spent more time on their boat they would understand just how noisy a slapping halyard can be.

For those with their panties bunched up over this "trespass",if your neighbors gate was slapping open and closed all night would you go latch it to make it stop?

I don't see why anyone would get bent out of shape if I boarded their boat to tie off a halyard. After reading this thread, if confronted i would now explain to them that every spring at launch time we replace many expensive halyards on customers boats due to not being tied off properly (which is true) The worst are on boats with wire to rope external halyards where the rope gets chafed away in the spreaders while the wire part is beating the paint to death. Its really a win,win situation for both of us but i wont even mention how inconsiderate it is to others to let your halyards slap, no,its all about doing him a favor. If he gets in my face ill just leave and inform him that if i see anything suspicious going on on his boat in the future like smoke coming out the hatch or its broken free from its mooring and is floating towards the rocks , ill just let it go. You cant pick and choose what is ok for someone to board your boat for, ie, cant tie off a halyard, ok to add chafe protection if i see your pennant is wearing through. In my mooring field there are only half a dozen boats and we have an agreement to watch over each others boats, but then there isn't an a hole amongst us, probably different in bigger fields.

I live on my boat, have been for the last 10 years, and I love the sound of a full marina and all the boats clanging .. it rocks me to sleep at night..

Once again, I am amused and bemused by this discussion. Even if it doesn't bother you, surely you realize it is an irritant for others. It's no different than blaring your stereo, or running a generator late at night. Basic human courtesy should be enough of a guide.

It would take an extreme case for me to step, uninvited, onto someone else's boat. I would try and talk to the person first. But if there was a loud and repeat offender I might take that step. After all this person is already trespassing and destroying my auditory space.

And seriously, how hard is it to tie off halyards anyway. .

What many people dont understand, its not there right or responsibility.
dosent have anything to do with the slapping, its stepping over the line that belongs to someone else.

and further, while I was talking to a guy on the dock a week or so ago, he bent down to my dock line and rolled it in a neet little sprial.. when he was through , I kicked it over into the water, pulled it out and piled the coulpe of feet of the dock line. now he migh have all the right reasons why he did what he did, BUT, it belongs to me, not him.

It all has to do with boundries..
