I don't hesitate to board and quiet halyards. I've never been thanked for it, and never even gotten my bungees back but no one has given me any trouble. This may be due, in part, to the many tattoos and piercings, the mohawk, and the brooding menace eager to be set free.

BTW - I hope you found an emergency bung and took care of the other end. The owners would appreciate coming back to a non-pooped deck.

So this vessel comes into our facility, transient boater on Fathers Day with the club full of families trying to enjoy the beautiful day the skipper decides to fire up the old bag pipe and starts going to town on the thing for over an hour. Now being a Scott I like the bag pipes as much as the next guy but this man was no virtuoso and after about a half hour of this horror show I was wishing I could get a root canal to numb the pain in my ears. So remembering the lessons from the intolerant in this thread I waited for him to stop the catawalling put the darned thing down in his deck chair and like the best navy seal slipped silently into the water and swam over to his vessel undetected, climbed aboard and put a little dab of 5200 into the mouthpiece of the offending instrument from hell, and just for good measure wrapped it all up with bungee cords, slipped back into the water silently and swam back to the peace and quiet of my little world.

But you almost had me with the bagpipes. Except, every Scot knows how to spell Scot, and that betrayed you. "Now being a Scott I" Drunk or sober, rich or poor, no Scotsman would waste two t's in the same word.

Bungees are nice, but crazy glue is cheaper. And far more entertaining to watch the feckless fellow try to unstick it hte next morning.

Slapping halyards can be really annoying for a live-aboard. I allways tie my own off. In the past I have been know to do it on other boats nearby, leave a note, speak to the owner, etc. If this fails, next time I just untie the halyard and pull it to the top of the mast. Usually works

Yep. If the nice approach does not work! I certainly don't do that the 1st time - I try to be friendly and explain the protocol etc. But, if all else fails....

And if you have both problems, solve them at the same time. Tie the halyard to the dog and then pull it to the top of the mast.
