Slapping Halyards

For the same reason folks don't take care of the halyards and other things earlier. When people lose interest in their "toys" they just leave them - out of sight, out of mind.
- - Which is shame because I am sure there are plenty of folks who would love to have that "forgotten toy" and take care of it.
- - Specifically, slapping wires inside a mast would require the removal of the mast from the boat to fix. That is no small task and not cheap. So it goes onto the "to do" list for sometime in the future.

Wiring slapping around inside a mast is not uncommon and the guy should fix it even if just out of consideration for others. I find it just as inconsiderate of sailboaters leaving halyards etc slapping as jackass powerboaters (and more and more sailboaters) running gensets when other boats are present in the anchorage. We are living in an increasingly inconsiderate society im sorry to say.

Even "pleasure" events like boating are becoming compromise situations.

I try to find good company, a bottle of wine, and am soon oblivious to the distractions.

Not a single halyard slapping in my marina.

That is until the winds come out of the east, between the condo, marina office, boat shop and covered docks, the wind just swirls around. My 2 neighbors had never had halyard slap until then.

Just went aboard both boats and fixed the problem. No big deal. When one of them came down to the boat and saw the adjustments, he came over, thanked me and apologized..

remember, the noise isa symptom of something wrong--- those noisey wires WILL fail just when he needs 'em most due to fracturing and abuse.

Slapping halyards annoy the crap out of me. I have a large (and inexpensive) bag of various sized bungee cords, and I'm not afraid to use them!

I don't own a boat but had always noticed the custom was to hook the halyard to one of the lifelines at the marina where my club is located. I hadn't understood why not leave it attached to the sail until I read this exchange.

I wouldn't attach halyards to life lines personally. It's not the end of the world and if that's your system it's no big deal. A ketch can have around five halyards and if you forget to rig one and start cranking away you'll rip the lifelines out.

I just get a little spooked at hooking a halyard+winch to anything that isn't a cleat or sail.

I must admit to slapping...it's the damm lazyjacks though. No matter how tight I pull them they just rattle like mad. If there is anyone you hate I will gladly moor near them to redeem myself for my noisy boat.

A J-38 owner two berths down complained about his own slapping halyards. (He has had the boat for about a year.) I (stink potter) showed him how to stop that (no, not by removing the mast). ... It's a process of educating one sailor at a time.

When I had lazyjacks I used to bungee them aft away from the mast.

So it was nice and quiet out on the mooring this past weekend. But .................. that same boat is back for its fourth year of playing "halyard slapping on the mast" music!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking that it is going to take some serious action to get across to this guy just how much this is bugging me!

I'm surprised that none of you have considered the "ultimate solution": simply detach the offending halyard(s) from their sails and hoist them to the masthead. Voila, no more slapping tonight. If you do it to ALL the halyards, he'll have to pull the mast to retrieve them and this should keep them quiet for a longish while.

Some might feel that this is uncivilized, so perhaps a conversation is a better solution after all...

mebbe he will get the clue after replacing the slapping halyards due to fracturing caused by the slapping.....but, then, some folks never get the clue.....
