You could be onto something there Thomas, although 'Drive - Float' doesnt quite have the same ring to it as 'Fly - Drive'

Back in the olden days, when barges were steam powered, the engine occupied the space previously used by the bargees family, so they towed what is known as a 'Butty', a smaller vessel which they lived in, preserving the vital cargo space on the main barge

Hey Anjou I'm also a pilot, so ya' know, maybe you could rivet on some wing thingys, some kinda vertical stabilizer, flaps and ailerons, the extend the prop shaft and mount you one big whopping prop, then......well.....it's an idea anyway.

I've never cruised the canals over there, but if they aren't all connected, then the 5th wheel idea would make the portage easier, ya' know? In any case, it looks like a great home.

I was honestly amazed when she did not head for the nearest airport when we touched land in Barbate... she went the distance.... one tough lady.... RESPECT.

Nice one Anjou... where's your cruising grounds gonna be.... You know on a fine day you can get across to France in her and do the French Canals when the Old Country starts to wear thin...

Congratulations, Anjou, in getting your hands on her at last. She's quite sturdy looking. What will you power her with? Enough to go up-current in European rivers? If you put a Victorian whore house decor in her, with lots of velour's, antique oil lamps and porcelain, you could probably charter her for several hundred a head per day and make a lot of new friends while fattening the freedom kitty. Can't imagine a smoother sweeter way to travel through the continent.

Are they still using horses? I just happen to finally be reading the Hornblower series, or the part that I bought, and am on Hornblower and the Atropos which begins with a barge trip down river and canal to London with wife and kid, to assume his new command. An interesting peek into 19th century England, tho' so far, I prefer the Aubrey/Maturin series.

I'm not sure Anjou would be happy without an engine to tinker with.

I think she is going to mount a couple of high end 250 hp outboards on her, and build a flybridge. I'll bet she could get her to plane just fine

Now, as perfect as that boat looks for exploring European canals, it reminds me of a hybrid between the two U. S. Civil War ironclads, the Monitor and the Merrimac. Of course, they didn't have like this total babe at the helm - they were busy booming and kabooming.
