Ship torpedoed

This is really amazing. The explosion makes the ship look like a toy.

I my previous life I was a Torpedoman - not the "Fire One!" type, but one who disassembled them and made repairs. This type of footage is always pretty humbling...

Rather than impact the hull as they did in the early days, modern torpedoes like this one are designed to explode several feet beneath the target. This uses the water column to distribute the force.

This was most likely a MK 48 torpedo - we sell them to most friendly countries. Although it's been a few years and could be perhaps a Marconi unit or another UK-sourced fish.

Whatever it was - it worked eh?

Better now than when you were serving though.

At least they don't sell them to all friendly countries.

Possibly because that list includes or has included in the past Iraq, Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordon, and a host of other dodgey suckers.
