Seasteading

Don't want to live on land? Don't want the hassles of learning to sail?

From Thailand (perhaps):

Re: Seasteading

That's a "floating home?"
I'd like to think of something charitable to say about it, but I am coming up empty.
Well, it does have a solar panel!

Re: Seasteading

Seasteading has been around for ages. Usually you start hearing more noise about it just before recessions. Mainly because just before a recession it almost looks economically viable. Then things collapse again and every investor with actual money has far more lucrative targets.

Re: Seasteading

Supposedly the guy is rich...if I was rich, I wouldn't want to live in a box in the middle of nowhere...presumably he is using this as nothing more than a tax dodge and isn't living in it full time.

So how does he get to and from his new micro-country? Thailand can simply deny visas to him and cut off trade (if his wife is claiming citizenship in the new state, they can strip her of Thai citizenship and deny her visas also). It's a pretty long way from just about anywhere else but Thailand. Then you have the 3, 12 and 200 mile limits, which are likely to be adjudicated in Thailand, so if Thailand says it's in their territory, it's in their territory.

Not a new concept and at best it might not be worth the country kicking you out.

well not actually . It is is a real and legitimate way of cruising and living on a boat .

A few issues:
- The original post is about a permanent structure fixed to the seabed. A boat that stays for short periods before moving on, is a different animal and would not be open to the same (theoretical) considerations. Even anchored long term, most countries wouldn't consider that a permanent homestead.
- A boat moving around wouldn't work unless it never went to shore or into territorial waters. Once you enter a country, you need to consider customs, immigration and visa requirements and they aren't going to consider your floating home a sovereign country. If you push the issue, they likely will simply deny you a visa and send you on your way.

Yes, you can live and travel on a boat but as a citizen of a legitimate country.

I do agree, it really doesn't have much of anything to do with the state of the economy. If anything I would expect it to get more consideration in a boom economy as people try to dodge big tax bills that come with big economic gains. If you just took a huge beating in the market, there isn't much of a tax implication to try and escape.

I agree with your post wholeheartedly .
My reply was just in direct reply to Corvidae and nothing more specific .

Just an aside I carry passports from the USA and the conch republic.

Kind of a corollary to the "golden rule".

He who has the navy decides if you are in THEIR sea.

The Moreau-Galt-Kaczynski Mosquito Coast Seastead

Phuket, Thailand

Territorial water or just outside, I can't imagine a single country batting an eye if/when such structures built by civilians are wiped off the water by the local navy.
