Do not ask how I know this.....
Well that explains why I am always talking to myself. The only difference is the more I learn the less I realize I know. By the time I croak I figure I won't know anything.

By time you croak anything you've learned you won't remember.

Do sea miles up and down at anchor count?

Do submerged miles count? Does nuclear propulsion count as sailing? Probably not...

Our chartplotter records total mileage. Presently just under 30,000 miles.

RYA yachtmaster scheme? Although that's not a license as such and even if it were it'd be a licence.

Of course both "days at sea" and "sea miles" aren't necessarily a measure of experience or competence. You can rack up 3.5k miles or 30-odd days at sea as crew on a single transatlantic. Does that make you more "experienced" than the person who's skippered across biscay and back and zig-zagged across the north sea a dozen times? Probably not.

In the electronics-related parts of this forum we're always getting people effectively saying "you should believe me because I work in computer security / for the NSA/GCHQ". Folks who actually know what they're talking about don't need to use their occupation to assert their statement's value.

Judge a post on its quality, not the unverified claims of "experience" by the poster.

Re: Sea Mile to Number of Posts Ratio

It's not the number of sea miles but
Where the miles were sailed

Biscay is not the ICW

Re: Sea Mile to Number of Posts Ratio

Re the question of "why would one measure sea miles"?: for those of us who predate electronic navigation, we ran deck logs and did DR plots to facilitate our celestial fixes. The habit has persisted for me, and keeping a total miles log as well as a daily run log is second nature.

For those who do lots of miles on other folks boats, where they are not in charge of navigation, the task is not so automatic, and I can understand why they'd have no idea.

Re: Sea Mile to Number of Posts Ratio

I know I did 12,000NM in one year - about 50 years ago.

Never worked out how many I've done since.

How would that work for women? I wonder if Jean Socrates could respond to this thread?

Due dilegence! Sea miles or hours logged still don't tell you if a person is smart enough to give intelligent advice. If you need to know something use 3 sources and compare the answers. If the sources agree then it's probably good stuff to know.
Curly, Larry and Moe don't count as three sources!

Rongvald - "I recently had this "conversation" in a previous post where a respondent claimed, in my opinion, a disproportionate number of miles sailed based upon the sailing season in the Great Lakes."

Just because you, as a weekend or vacation sailor can't imagine sailing all those miles does not mean that a pro sailor would not do so.

I do not know Delancy, but I know a lot of folks who sail lots of miles, both pros and amateurs. Sheesh, even Ann and I, doddering old farts that we are average over 3000 miles a year, and have done so for three decades now.

I reckon you owe him an apology...
