Huh? What were we talking about now? Oh yeah, now I remember. FWIW anything I post is done so out of charity to further the available information. Personally I couldn't care less about measuring contests. I sail to escape the constant barrage of weak minded individuals who feel their worth is measured by comparing theirs' to others' achievements. I am quite happy to sail about my puddle and challenge myself to become a better sailor. I suspect that would be most of us. The sites, sounds and emotions I have experienced are mine and mine alone. Even those with the most limited experience can share often bringing back enjoyable memories of our first experiences with sailyboats.

This is the only Forum I post to....

I don't have time to get vested in any other and all the regulars I have come to know have become my virtual friends.

That means I give them the benefit of the doubt and feel really bad, if I have inadvertently offended thru this awkward medium of writing.

Perhaps we should just put away our tape measures and accept the unique contributions with grace.

There still remains the question of: is this information that someone posted actually true, or just some hogwash that he/she theorizes. For me, the answer is to find independent verification if in doubt. Offending/not offending others is one goal, but if someone asks as good question about anchors, autopilots, AIS, etc., there will invariably be right and wrong answers. Nobody wants or needs wrong answers, but they still get posted, even by people who don't offend anyone.

Thank you for the kind words, Boatie. Yes, we do have a lot of cruising miles. However, you have a lot of hard miles in difficult boats, including the one that tried to kill you last year. You have shown yourself to have skill in nursing boats not set up to your own standards through difficult conditions. Furthermore, when you feel like it, you are able to get to the heart of an issue in two or three sentences, a skill I quite admire--and, lack!

Cheers, mate,

Ann

Re: Sea Mile to Number of Posts Ratio

As to trying to get a sense of who the people are behind the avatars, well, those who are interested to be known fill out their profile. If you look at mine, for instance, I wrote that when I chose to become a member here, long after Jim, and after occasionally writing under his name. I wrote only what I thought would tell other sailors about my sailing.

Even the profiles only tell a little of our story. If you hang around enough, and remember avatars, pretty soon you develop a sense for who shows some integrity and who does not, and also, those who seem to get off on being snarky. My boss used to say that the reason we have two ears and one mouth is so we listen twice as much and not shoot off our mouth! But if you hang out and observe, and cut those whose posts offend you a great deal of slack, you can learn a lot about them.

And the idiot posts get no likes, or only "Likes" from idiots. It shows the quality posts post by post.

On Cf the only way I can show other forum members i agree with someones advice is to write a +1 post. With a "Like" button a lot of those posts are unnecessary.

I commend the Mods here to let it happen on CF.

+1.

Many cruisers are into the mileage thing on autopilot and working on the boat. I'm in the process of trying to learn this as an ex racer

Racing though does help you learn sailing if that counts. Here's an interesting video, but they aren't getting many miles. Do backing up sailing miles count?

Re: Sea Mile to Number of Posts Ratio

I have learnt a lot more when 'coastal' than I ever have 'deep sea'... and that is on both big ships and small.
