"Sea miles" is a relatively new phenomena perpetuated by yachtsmen who find that this somehow qualifies and quantifies your maritime expertise. Nowhere anywhere in the professional maritime world is "sea miles" used as a measure of competence. In any license application experience is measured in days and years at sea. I suspect from the mileage numbers I have seen thrown around that there is copious amounts of what in flying(measured in hours) is called P-51 time! And also, as in time, you can have one miles experience 1000 times and never learn the first thing beyond that first mile. Or let's say your riding out a fishing trip on Georges bank in the winter with gale after gale for several weeks and basically going nowhere but working in those conditions and only went 100 miles in circles, does that compare to a ride down the ICW in a yacht? Mileage is for braggarts in bars.

We haven't counted for ourselves, but I did wonder once how many miles our dog has sailed with us. He's at about 13,000. So, that makes about 50 miles per post since adding the dog to the crew-The dog is consulted on all contributions to CF... He has a surprising amount of good insights to offer.

I honestly have no idea how many miles I have, I really never bothered to count and I am not sure how I would. My longest trips were two transatlantic crossings as deck crew on a US Navy ship... I don't think I learned much there, my stupidest was a 150nm sail in a 19' boat during a tropical depression getting the **** kicked out of us for four days that was a learning experience.

Rather than the forum listing the number of posts a person has made, wouldn't it be more useful to see something like the ratio of Sea Miles traveled to Number of Post ratio? We could weight it to include years of boat ownership, years of living aboard, years of cruising, etc.

I don't track miles, nor do I keep a Logbook, and I don't see the need. I've found that in flying that many well kept logbooks are pure fabrications, I'd bet the same may exist in Sailing?
I don't even log my flying time anymore, after 10,000 hours or so, why?
Now, I'm not an experienced Sailor, and don't pretend to be, I'll never accumulate the miles some have, I'm starting out too old, and that is not my goal.
I have no idea how far we will go, I have dreams of course, just I don't know if they are realistic, won't know until we try.

Have never kept track of miles. Sea time to me was always how long you were signed-on to a vessel. Whether you were in port, at sea, or even in dry-dock, as long as you were signed-on it all counted.

Quite the subject, I've done quite a few more miles offshore than a circumnavigation but not sure what it really means, if anything. Im pretty sure I was a better sailor 20 years ago than I am today. Probably the more you sail the more opinionated you get so maybe a bit more bias towards certain ideas but that doesn't make you right. In life I've never learned much from people that agree with me so it's nice to hear other people's opinions as long as they are backed up with some personal knowledge and experience.

How are we doing the ratio? Is it mile/posts or posts/miles? I need to know if I'm going to be infinite or undefined if I claim 0 miles.

The mods don't assign stars. It's a function of the number of posts.

The number of thanks received might be some indication relative quality of posts. You can get an idea about the number of Thanks received from the number of green boxes and the wording that appears when you hover the cutie over the boxes
