Hi All. Bumped into this thread randomly searching for more sailing music. I'd seen this site before but really checked it out. Impressive site.
Anyway, I sail as well so I joined up!
Figured for my first post I could contribute. Lots of good stuff already mentioned, but here's some of the contemporary sailling music I love:
Decemberists (Very 'piratey')
- Mariner's Revenge Song
- Shanty for Arethusa
- My Mother Was Chinese Trapeze Artist (part of its about sailing)
Flogging Molly (piratey as well)
- Tabacco Island
- May the Living Be the Dead in Our Wake
- Cruel Mistress
- Float (not really a sailing song, but there's a boat metaphor and the song's really good)
Del McCoury (bluegrass)
- the King's Shilling (no link)
Justin Sullivan (this is my fav)
- Ocean Rising
Okkervil River
-
Lost Coastlines
- Mermaid
Gillian Welch
- Dear Someone
The Builders and the Butchers
- It Came From the Sea
O'Death
- Underwater Nightmare
Anyway, that's good for a start. There's a lot more though. If you widen the net to include songs about boats and the ocean, there's tons.
Port O'Brien (frequently sings about Alaskan Fishing)
Decemberists (tons of Nautical imagery in the lyrics on the first 3 albums)
John Vanderslice (frequently uses nautical imagery)
Lonely Island (I'm on a Boat!)
Sophie Zelmani (sings about the Sea)
Justin Sullivan (sings about coastal life and the sea)
New Model Army (a few sea songs)
Pogues (Lots)
Flogging Molly (Lots and Lots)
Handsome
Family (A few songs)
Mountain Goats (Frequent Theme)
Too many various and sundry rock n roll one offs to name.
