Sailing for Peace

Hi!
Does anyone have any info regarding clubs or organizations that are dedicated to sailing for peace? We are leaving the west coast aboard our sailboat next month in hopes of raising global awareness and broadening an understanding of our common humanity.....We are planning to take small, non-pharmaceutical Ophthamolic equipment (eye wear, solutions, etc) to remote and/or isolated countries.....

Thanks...

I had a friend in Whangeri, New Zealand, who sailed a yacht named "Wage Peace". He was a Baha'i and took his peace mission seriously.

Good for you. If only there were more like you this would be a much better place to live.

Sounds like a great idea. Sometimes reaching one person at a time adds up to many.

Thats a great but serious undertaking. And only 1 month to research where these goods are needed, how to get there, and how to distribute them.

Nic and I have decided to 'look', 'learn', but not 'help'.

We will buy local goods from local suppliers, shops, restaurants, handcrafts etc but we have decided not to give things away for free and not present our philosophies.

But there must be areas where your goods will be welcome and won't make the local merchant go broke as they are just as important to a community to bring in the broad range of goods.

Good luck with it.

Mark

I appreciate your ideas and, once again, am impressed by the responses from people on this forum. MarkJ has a great comment about the complexity of helping people whose circumstances are new to you. The law of unintended consequences applies to the good hearted as surely as to anyone else. Take the time to learn about a place and try to work with system in place, no matter how simple it may seem. Opthalmic supplies seems a great and needed and often unavailable resource. Good luck and I know you will learn more from the people you connect with than any cost involved.

Thank you for your kind, insightful, and supportive responses.....We've been looking into this for about 2 years ---- and there are regulations and responsibilities that we are investigating......The desire to be "in service" is there --- we are working on making it all materialize!
