Then you gotta get past the Coast Guard. I don't know where you are but over here they are Everywhere!

And more importantly, if we're grabbing the boat free of charge, why not a Hallberg Rassy or a Najad but a Beneteau? Or even better, a proper cat? (Yes, I'm adding a bit of mono v.s. multi heat here! Heh heh he...)

End of the world? Get a very well insulated boat with heat resistant paint....aren't the oceans suppose to boil?

One of the factors in the purchase of the sailboat is that it is definitely an awesome zombie apocalypse escape pod. Now I just have to start my campaign of crazy couponing to acquire all the required staples for as close to free as possible. It'll be tight quarters on the Cal 2-29, but I reckon we can put up with it for a few years.

Re: Sailboat for End of The World Getaway (Merged)

In a dollar collapse, there would be a breakdown of social norms. The coast guard crew have family too. I don't think they will be out in full force and if they are, Im sure they will have more pressing issues. I have often thought that anyone could sail off in my boat and I wouldn't know it for days. I would "grab" it about 5am. Early enough for no one to be at or up in the marina and late enough to be overlooked by the coast guard as a midnight run. If you did it on a monday night you may have up to 4 days before they saw it missing. I'd be on the other side of Cuba by then. Lucky I had the upbringing that I did or I would be in jail....

Never thought much on the subject before having my girls. Being responsible for others, ie wife, two girls, in such a situation is very real concern. I live on the Delmarva peninsula, in a true disaster scenario it would be almost impossible to leave quickly by land. The sea has always been our emergency escape plan, albeit commandering an unattended vessel. Now we are looking at cruising so atleast we won't have to "find" one.

Okay the Coast Guard is down to half the manpower then. But the eye in the sky is on 24 hours a day. So I would recommend Gunk holing it during the day and hiding then moving at night. That way you have cover of darkness until you get to where you want to go. And no Nav lights at night or your goose will be cooked.

Re: Sailboat for End of The World Getaway (Merged)

Can we stop this line of conversation? A lot of us own boats...

And when I show up with our groceries, my wife and kids, I want our boat to be there.

(Hmm, maybe it's time to get some good locks and kryptonite chains. I could make a lowjack system out of an Android phone, in an afternoon. Hmmm.)

Regards,
Brad

Re: Sailboat for End of The World Getaway (Merged)

Hell, there are SO MANY boats in the marinas around here that don't see their owners from month to month... Look for the one that hasn't been washed down in a month of sundays and hijack it... no one will notice it's missing for ages ; -)

Well, except in our marina... if ya come here to *shop* leave that grimy little Cal28 alone... she's dirty but we are aboard!

and I have to offer up here that were I planning to travel to the end of the world... well it would have to be in a coracle for me... with a stalwart mouse for a companion...

knew a guy once that did just that, started by hanging around the marina, then coming down and washing down one of the boats at the end of the dock, then moved on,finally left after about a month........marina only discovered it was stolen 3 months later when they sent the annual bill to the owners, who asked if the staff could check on it!!!!

we all thought this guy was the owner!!!!

Re: Sailboat for End of The World Getaway (Merged)

So let me get this straight.

Some of you friendly, courteous, diligent members of this forum would go out and steal someone elses boat instead of being proactive and prepare one of your own?

Just want to make sure, because I don't want to feel guilty dropping you as you climb onboard mine.

Beneteau or not, this part of the discussion doesn't help us.

Maybe in private over a few beers, but not permanently on the Internet in this age of efficient Google searching.

Brad
