Nonsense.

I've never seen anyone ever flying an American flag oversized here in the Med, along the western Atlantic or in America.

I think you are right Kenomac. As for flags the size of bed sheets, we are not so flashy! We wouldnt fly flags at all, except that it is required.

Maybe just be the Caribbean then.

Only trying to help, little things can change a lot of how initial perceptions go..

The only boats that I've come across flying bigger than normal flags have been American. In fairness there hasnt been many, but enough that I've noticed.
I haven't observed anti americanism from the locals in various countries that I've visited but I have observed it from other cruisers at times, mainly regarding foreign policy .Only two weeks ago at a place called Palau wey I came across it again. Once again I don't hear it often but I hear it. Is there truth in their gripes? To be honest I wouldn't know.
The other thing of late is, I can't remember ever hearing so much talk from non US citizen's regarding US presidential candidate's before, the whole Trump thing is big.

It's our way of showing embarrassment as the locals might have met UK package tourists first...

He meant that they are large. I had an Oyster next to me in Dominica with a flag so big it took force 6 winds to lift it.

Re: Safety for Americans abroad

You must all be sailing in the Caribbean, I can only report what I see here in the EU. I've probably only seen 20 American flags in total over the past five summers if I don't count the Turkish vessels flagged in Delaware. Then I'd need to add 50 more, but they fly these embarassingly small American flags around 12 inches by 24 inches on a 90ft motor yacht. That's the easy way to spot them.

She said Toronto. I told her I was also Canadian. She admitted to me she was really American but told everyone she was from Toronto. She told me it seemed safer to her. I must point out this was not a hazardous area, nor do/did I look or act threatening. This was maybe a decade ago. I was surprised at the time to actually meet a counterfeit Canadian. It stuck with me.

I don't recall meeting any other wannabees, but I hear there have been a lot of google searches about immigrating to Canada since Brexit, and given Trump's popularity.

When I did the obligatory European tour in 1960, I went with a couple of Americans and they pleaded with me to give them a couple of Canadian flag patches to sew on their rucksacks.. Even in those days, Yanks were nervous about traveling overseas! Phil
